Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Saruhashi Bridge is a wooden tourist attraction in Otsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture, known for the beautiful scenery created by the combination of a deep valley and a wooden bridge. There are various theories about the origin of the name, with some sayings including "long ago, monkeys served as a bridge to cross the valley" and "the bridge's structure resembles the limbs of a monkey." It has been used by people since ancient times, and has undergone repeated maintenance and repairs since the Edo period to become the tourist attraction it is today.

Its distinctive feature is its unique wooden structure that juts out into the valley. Rather than being supported directly by girders, the structure is supported by diagonally projecting beams and rafters, creating a visually striking and photogenic landscape with supporting structures on both sides of the valley. It is particularly popular during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season, when many tourists and photography enthusiasts visit.

Highlights

  • The structural beauty of the bridge itself: its wooden construction and the shape that juts out over the valley are a must-see. You can enjoy both its impressive appearance up close and its appearance from a distance.
  • Valley scenery: The rock faces and flowing river that spread out both upstream and downstream, as well as the seasonal vegetation, are beautiful, and the autumn foliage is particularly spectacular.
  • Photo spots: You can take photos of different expressions depending on the time of day, such as from directly in front of the bridge, from a higher vantage point a little further away, or from the top of the bridge. The early morning fog and backlighting at dusk are also attractive.
  • Strolling around the area: You can enjoy the scenery from a different angle from the footpath and observation space beyond the bridge. There are also areas with cherry blossoms and walking trails nearby.
  • Local souvenirs and snacks: You can enjoy local specialties and snacks at the surrounding shops and teahouses (opening hours vary depending on the season).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train: Get off at Saruhashi Station on the JR Chuo Main Line and walk for about 5-10 minutes. Follow the signs from the station to easily find your way. From Tokyo, you can access the area by taking the Chuo Line rapid or local trains (the number of stops for express and rapid trains varies depending on the train).
  • By car: Approximately 15 minutes from Otsuki IC on the Chuo Expressway via national and prefectural roads (depending on traffic conditions). There is a parking lot near the site, but the number of spaces is limited, so it is recommended to arrive early if it is busy.
  • Bus/Taxi: Taking a taxi from the nearest station (Sarahashi Station or Otsuki Station) is also convenient. There are also local buses that run from Otsuki Station, but please note that there are few buses, so we recommend checking the timetable.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: If you only want to see the bridge and take photos, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • A leisurely stroll: Allow 1-2 hours if you want to visit the surrounding observation spots and shops.
  • Photography/walking around: If you include early morning and evening photography and walking around the area, it's a good idea to allow 2-3 hours.

Nearby spots

  • Tourist attractions in Otsuki City: Close to viewing spots for Mt. Fuji and the entrance to Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, there are many nature walks and hiking routes.
  • Nearby hot spring facilities: There are many day spas and inns scattered around the area, where you can relax after sightseeing (convenient if you are traveling by car).
  • Historical and cultural facilities: There are places in Otsuki where you can learn about the history of the area, such as museums and local historical sites.
  • Driving course: We also recommend combining this with sightseeing in the surrounding area (towards Kawaguchiko and Kofu) using the Chuo Expressway.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Tourists flock to the park especially during the autumn foliage season (late October to November), cherry blossom season, weekends, and public holidays. Parking lots tend to fill up during peak times, so we recommend using public transportation or visiting early in the morning.
  • Safety and etiquette: The bridge is a wooden structure for pedestrians only. Running, leaning on the railings, or climbing on it is dangerous. If you are traveling with small children, please keep an eye on them and hold their hands.
  • Bad weather: The floorboards become slippery when it rains or freezes in winter. Wear non-slip shoes and warm clothing. When the water level rises, the current is fast and it is dangerous to go down to the riverbank.
  • Consideration when taking photos: As many tourists visit, please be considerate of those around you when using tripods or large equipment. Drone flying may be prohibited due to local regulations or safety reasons, so please check in advance.
  • Take your trash home: There are often limited trash cans, so please be mindful of your manners by taking your trash home or disposing of it in designated areas.
