Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Yaizu Sakana Center is a representative seafood direct sales and tourist facility in Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Yaizu is a port town with a long history of fishing and processing industries, and is particularly famous for migratory fish such as bonito and tuna, as well as fresh fish blessed by the Kuroshio Current. In addition to being able to purchase fresh seafood landed at the local fishing port, the Sakana Center is also home to restaurants using seafood, specialty shops selling dried fish and processed products, and souvenir shops, making it a lively spot where tourists and locals mingle.
Highlights
- Fresh seafood: Fillets, whole fish, and sashimi platters are all available, and discerning stores will be happy to recommend the day's best.
- Seafood restaurants and sushi restaurants: Enjoy reasonably priced seafood bowls and nigiri sushi made with local ingredients. Some popular restaurants have long lines.
- Tuna and bonito filleting shows: These are sometimes held on weekends or during events, and you can enjoy impressive demonstrations and tastings (please check the dates).
- Processed products and souvenirs: We have a wide selection of Yaizu-style processed seafood products, including dried fish, dried bonito flakes, tsukudani (simmered foods), and delicacies. We also have a wide selection of gift packaging.
- Tasting corner: Many stores allow you to try small amounts of food, and you can buy what you like on the spot.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: Yaizu Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line. From the station, it's about a 10-minute taxi ride, or 10-20 minutes by local bus or community bus (depending on the route and time of day). It's about a 30-40 minute walk (about 2-3km).
- By car: Approximately 10-20 minutes by car from Yaizu IC on the Tomei Expressway. There is a parking lot near the facility, but it can get crowded during peak tourist season.
- Public transportation information: Buses may have limited service, so it is best to check the timetable in advance or consider taking a taxi.

- Short visit: 30 minutes (just shopping and looking at the market atmosphere)
- Dining and Shopping: 1-2 hours (eat seafood bowls or sushi, and choose souvenirs)
- For events or leisurely visits: 2-3 hours (including dismantling shows and visiting multiple stores)

- Yaizu Port Area: You can enjoy a stroll along the harbor, viewing the scenery and fishing boats of the port.
- Local seafood restaurants and sushi restaurants: There are many popular restaurants scattered around the center and throughout the city.
- From Shizuoka City and Fujieda City: The tourist attractions of Shizuoka City and Fujieda are within a 30-40 minute drive, so you can expand your sightseeing plans by traveling a little further.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: It gets especially crowded on weekends, holidays, and tourist seasons (such as summer vacation). You may have to wait for parking spaces or queues at restaurants, so we recommend arriving early.
- Business hours: Each store has different opening hours and closing days. Some stores close early in the morning or in the evening, so please check the official website or call ahead to confirm.
- Take-out/Keeping Refrigerated: If you are purchasing fresh fish, it is a good idea to bring an insulated bag or ice packs. Avoid carrying it for long periods of time, and refrigerate or freeze it immediately upon returning home.
- Cash/Credit Card: Some small stores only accept cash. Although more and more stores are accepting credit cards and electronic money, it's best to have cash on hand.
- Photography and Safety: There are work areas and loading entrances within the market, which can be dangerous. Please do not enter restricted areas and be careful not to interfere with the work of employees. When taking photographs, please be considerate of the stores and employees.
- Caution when eating raw food: Freshness is key when it comes to sashimi and other raw foods, but pregnant women and those who are not feeling well should be careful about consuming raw foods.
