Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Itako Iris Garden (Itako City) is a famous spot for irises (ayame / hanashobu) located in the waterside region of Ibaraki Prefecture. Colorful irises are planted in the garden, which makes the most of its waterfront location, and are usually in full bloom from late May to June. The landscape, which combines a wide wetland with walking paths and old-fashioned boats and bridges, is popular with photography enthusiasts and those who enjoy strolling. The annual Iris Festival is a lively event featuring iris girls, boat events, and local stalls, and is an attractive place where tradition and nature blend together in harmony.

Highlights

  • Iris scenery: A variety of varieties, including stripes, spots, and vivid purples, whites, and yellows, decorate the waterside. There are many spots for photography, and the early morning and evening light is beautiful.
  • Boat tours (water sightseeing): You may be able to take a boat tour of the garden and the surrounding waterways, allowing you to enjoy the flowers and scenery reflected on the water's surface up close (operations vary depending on the season).
  • Iris Festival: There are plenty of events on weekends and holidays, including local traditional events and dances, and kimono-clad "iris girls."
  • Walking trails and rest areas: Enjoy the scenery at your leisure on the walking trails and rest areas within the park. Some areas have benches and shade.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train: The nearest station is Itako Station (JR Kashima Line). From the station, it is common to take a bus or taxi. Special shuttle buses may operate depending on the season.
  • By car: Accessible via the Higashi-Kanto Expressway or national highways. Parking is available nearby (fees may apply).
  • Buses and sightseeing boats: There are many tourist shuttle buses and sightseeing boats operating during the Iris Festival, so please check the official information for operational status.
  • Note: The availability of public transportation, parking, and shuttle services may vary depending on the season and the year, so we recommend checking the latest information on the official websites and tourist information of Itako City and the Iris Garden before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term viewing: 30 minutes to 1 hour (if only visiting the main attractions)
  • Leisurely stroll and photography: 1.5 to 2 hours (including seeing the whole park, taking photos, and taking breaks)
  • If you include boat tours and sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (if you combine it with other sightseeing spots in the area)

Nearby spots

  • Waterside scenery (Itako's canals and waterways): Enjoy boat trips and strolls along the waterfront.
  • Kashima, Kitaura, and Kasumigaura area: Nature tourism and fishing spots that make use of the lakes and rivers.
  • Sawara (Katori City): A tourist destination that retains the charm of old townscapes and riverside areas, accessible by car or public transportation (historic buildings preservation district, etc.).
  • Local restaurants and souvenir shops: There are shops selling seasonal ingredients and local specialties scattered around the area. There are also food stalls during the Iris Festival.

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The irises are extremely crowded on weekends and public holidays during the peak viewing season, Golden Week, and during the Iris Festival. If you plan to visit early in the morning or on a weekday, you will have more time to enjoy the view.
  • Manners: Please observe basic manners, such as not touching flowers and plants, not entering restricted areas, and taking your trash home (or to designated areas). When taking photos, please be considerate and not disturb other visitors or event staff.
  • Footing and clothing: As there are wetlands and boardwalks in the park, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Rain and morning dew can make the ground slippery.
  • Insect repellent and heatstroke prevention: Insects are more likely to appear in May and June, and temperatures can rise during the day. Please bring insect repellent, drinks, a hat, etc.
  • Check facility information: Admission fees, opening hours, boat operations, event dates, etc. may change from year to year. Please check the latest information from the Itako City Tourism Association or the official Iris Garden website before visiting.

*For the latest opening hours, event information, and access (such as whether there is a shuttle bus or parking information), please check the official Itako City Iris Garden website and tourist information.
