Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Togetsukyo Bridge is a representative bridge over the Katsura River (upstream of the Hozu River) in Arashiyama, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, and is a symbol of Arashiyama. Its name comes from the fact that poets and successive emperors from the Heian to Kamakura periods said that it looked like the moon was crossing the bridge. The current bridge has been reinforced with modern features while retaining its traditional appearance, and its location, which harmonizes with the scenery throughout the four seasons, is an attractive feature.

In addition to the seasonal scenery, such as cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and the tranquil scenery in winter, the mountain ranges reflected on the river's surface and the surrounding historical buildings attract tourists. The river is sometimes lit up at night, so you can enjoy the scenery day or night.

Highlights

  • View from the bridge: You can see the Arashiyama mountain range, the flow of the Katsura River, and the changing colors of the trees with each season. It's a popular photo spot.
  • Riverside stroll: You can cross the bridge and descend to the riverbank, where you can enjoy the boats and the scenery of boats going down the Hozu River up close.
  • Access to the Bamboo Forest Path: The famous Bamboo Forest Path is within walking distance from Togetsukyo Bridge (we recommend combining this with a visit to the bamboo forest).
  • Nearby temples, shrines, and historical sites: Historic temples and shrines such as Tenryu-ji Temple and Nonomiya Shrine are located nearby, making it possible to take a cultural stroll.
  • Seasonal illuminations and events: During the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, the temple is illuminated and specially opened to the public, and the night view is also a highlight.

  • Transportation: Please be careful when biking or driving due to narrow roads and sidewalks. Parking lots fill up quickly.
  • Weather and season: The Katsura River may flood or be restricted from traffic due to the rainy season or typhoons. Please check the weather forecast and local information in advance.
