Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shibuya 109 is a leading fashion building for young people located in Dogenzaka, Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. Opened in the late 1970s, it has long been a popular hub for fashion and culture for women in their teens and twenties. The name "109" comes from Tokyu (To-Kyu → 10・9), the company that operates it. Home to many small, independent shops, its appeal lies in the fact that you can quickly check out the latest trends in clothing, shoes, accessories, and cosmetics. With a wide range of shops, from gyaru (gal) to casual, street, and Harajuku-inspired styles, it's a spot where you can get a feel for the latest in youth culture.

Highlights

  • Each floor has a different selection of shops: There are many unique brands, so it's fun to browse the small shops.
  • A place where the latest trends originate: Seasonal trend items and limited edition products are easily available.
  • Instagrammable spots: The displays and shop visuals inside the building are photogenic.
  • Events and collaborations: Brand pop-ups, collaborations, and sales.
  • Tourist services: There may be duty-free stores and information staff (depending on the store).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Address: 2-29-1 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0043 (The facility name and address may change, so please check the official website before visiting.)
  • Nearest station: A short walk from Shibuya Station (JR, private railways, and subway). Exit from the Hachiko Exit (or the scramble crossing side) and head towards Center Street. You will see it. It's about a 1-5 minute walk.
  • Bus: Accessible from bus stops around Shibuya Station. Bus stops vary depending on the route, so please check the route map.
  • By car: The area is very congested, so we recommend using public transportation. There is a coin parking lot nearby, but the number of spaces is limited.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short check: 30 minutes to 1 hour (enough to shop or check out the shop you want to visit)
  • Leisurely shopping: 1-2 hours (including visiting multiple floors and trying on clothes)
  • During events and sales: It may take more than two hours. Travel time may be longer due to congestion.

Nearby spots

  • Shibuya Scramble Crossing and Hachiko Statue: An iconic spot in Shibuya, just a few minutes' walk away.
  • Center Street: A bustling downtown area for young people, packed with restaurants and shops.
  • Shibuya Hikarie: A large complex with shopping, dining, and an observation space.
  • Shibuya Stream/Shibuya Cast: Relatively new commercial and office areas.
  • Yoyogi Park and Meiji Shrine: Experience nature and history on foot or a short train ride away.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded on weekends, in the evenings, during sales, and during events like Halloween. There may be lines at the cash registers and fitting rooms, so be sure to allow plenty of time.
  • Photography: There are some areas in the building and in each shop where photography is prohibited. Please check with staff before taking photos inside the store.
  • Trying on clothes and size: Japanese brands aimed at young people tend to run smaller in size. If you are concerned, be sure to try them on. Be mindful of etiquette when trying on clothes (no perfume, eating or drinking, etc.).
  • Duty-free and payment: Duty-free shops and payment methods (cash, card, electronic money) vary by shop. Don't forget your passport when using the duty-free option.
  • Managing valuables: Beware of pickpockets when it's crowded. Protect yourself by keeping your bag fastened and on your person.
  • Weather and season: Summer and winter sales, New Year's holidays, and Golden Week are particularly busy times, so we recommend visiting at different times.
  • Opening hours: Opening and closing times may vary depending on the store. Please check the official website for the latest opening hours and closing days before visiting.

Note: We recommend checking the Shibuya 109 official website or social media for the latest shop information, opening hours, and event details.
