Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Awaji Yumebutai is a complex located in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture, designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. It was developed following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 with the aim of restoring the lost natural environment and revitalizing the local area. It features a terraced landscape that makes use of the terraced land facing the sea, and Ando's signature contrast between concrete and natural light.

The park is home to a tiered garden called "Hyakudan-en," the Miracle Star Botanical Garden (greenhouse) which displays tropical and temperate plants, an international conference center, restaurants, shops, and more, making it a tourist spot that combines architectural, garden, and plant attractions. The view of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and the Seto Inland Sea is also a major attraction.

Highlights

  • Hyakudanen: There are about 100 flower beds and stone steps arranged in a terraced style. The plants change with the seasons, making it a popular photo spot.
  • Miracle Star Botanical Garden (Greenhouse): Exhibits a variety of plants from Japan and abroad. As it is a greenhouse, it can be enjoyed even on rainy days, and seasonal exhibitions and illuminations are sometimes held.
  • Architecture and Landscape: Tadao Ando's concrete architecture and spatial design make the most of natural light. The views from the terrace and corridor that blend in with the sea are spectacular.
  • Viewpoints and photo spotsThere are several great viewing points overlooking the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, and the light in the morning and evening is beautiful.
  • Restaurants and cafes: There are restaurants that serve dishes using local Awaji Island ingredients (such as Awaji onions), so you can enjoy a meal there too.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • carFrom the Kobe/Awaji area, take the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway via the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. Follow the signs to Awaji IC and the surrounding parking lots (parking available). The travel time varies depending on your departure point, but it generally takes about 40 to 60 minutes from central Kobe.
  • Expressway buses and local buses: Express buses bound for Awajishima run from Sannomiya (Kobe) and Osaka. Most people travel from the bus stop by local bus or taxi, so please check the timetable and route in advance.
  • Train + Bus: There are no trains on Awaji Island, but you can access the island by bus from the nearest JR station. However, there are only a few buses, so you'll need to plan your trip accordingly based on your arrival time.
  • *We recommend checking the latest timetables, operation information, parking locations and fees in advance on the official website or transportation information.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short time (mainly strolling): 1 to 1.5 hours (light tour of the terrace and Hyakudanen Garden)
  • Standard (including botanical gardens and meals): 2-3 hours (visit to the Miracle Star Botanical Gardens + lunch)
  • Leisurely sightseeing: Half a day to a full day (may include sightseeing in the surrounding area, taking photos, participating in events, etc.)

Nearby spots

  • Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park (Awaji District) — A large park along the seafront with flower fields and walking trails.
  • Awaji Hanasajiki — A flower field that spreads across the hills, offering seasonal flowers and a beautiful view.
  • Awaji Island's hot springs and accommodations - Convenient for day trips or overnight stays.
  • Restaurants serving local delicacies (onion dishes, seafood) - you can taste ingredients unique to Awaji Island.
  • Kita Awaji Earthquake Memorial Park - A facility that conveys the memory of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (accessible by car).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: The park gets crowded on weekends, consecutive holidays, and during the peak season for seasonal flowers (spring to early summer, autumn, etc.). Parking lots and restaurants tend to be crowded, so it's best to leave earlier or visit at a different time.
  • Stairs and steps: There are many steps in some areas, such as Hyakudanen. There are some restrictions on movement with strollers and wheelchairs, so please check the barrier-free information in advance.
  • Weather/Clothing:The wind can be strong along the coast, and there are temperature differences depending on the season. In particular, the wind is cold in winter, and protection from the sun is necessary in summer.
  • Use of the Botanical Garden: The greenhouse is temperature-controlled, so be aware of the temperature difference between inside and outside. The dates and prices of special exhibitions and events change from time to time, so be sure to check the official information.
  • Manners: To protect the scenery, please be considerate of your surroundings by taking your trash with you, not touching the plants, and following the photography rules (regarding whether or not photography is permitted in the observation area and exhibits).

Awaji Yumebutai is a place where architecture, gardens, and natural scenery come together. Check the official website before your visit for opening hours, event information, and access information to ensure a smoother experience on the day.
