Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Etajima is an island and city area (Etajima City, Hiroshima Prefecture) located off the coast of Hiroshima Bay, where historical sites related to the navy and the rich natural beauty of the sea coexist. From the Meiji to Showa periods, it was the base of the former Naval Academy, and even today it is home to educational and training facilities related to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, making it a popular destination for historical sites and museums related to the navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The warm Seto Inland Sea climate also makes it an attractive place to enjoy fishing (oysters and seafood), marine leisure activities, and the quiet island lifestyle.

Highlights

  • Former Naval Academy Site and Museum: Historical sites and exhibits that convey the history of naval education. Part of the site is a Self-Defense Force facility, so please be careful about the tour route and opening days.
  • Maritime Self-Defense Force-related exhibits and memorial halls: There are facilities that exhibit ships, uniforms, and documents, and it is recommended for those interested in naval history.
  • Port town scenery and port tours: The fishing port, pier, and ocean views are dotted with beautiful spots for morning and evening views.
  • Marine Activities: You can enjoy sea activities such as fishing, kayaking, and swimming (depending on the location).
  • 食: You can enjoy fresh local seafood, especially Setouchi seafood such as oysters and conger eels.
  • Cycling/WalkingThe island has a moderate amount of ups and downs, making it ideal for a leisurely bike ride. The alleyways of the villages and the roads along the sea are charming.
  • Viewpoint: Enjoy the view of the Seto Inland Sea and neighboring islands from a slightly elevated location (views may change depending on the season and weather).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Since Etajima is an island, it is mainly accessed by ferry or connecting boat. The number of flights and departure and arrival points vary depending on the season and day of the week, so we recommend checking in advance.

  • Store Hours: There are few restaurants and shops, and some stores are closed, especially on weekdays and during the winter. Plan your meals and shopping accordingly.
  • Weather and sea conditions: On days with strong winds or waves, boats may be canceled or delayed. If you are planning to go out to sea, please check the weather forecast and route information.
