Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yanagawa River Cruise is a sightseeing boat tour that takes you on a traditional donko boat through the canals of Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The canals, which were built during the castle town era, flow right through the city, and the scenery of willow trees, old townhouses, and stone bridges reflected on the water is captivating. The boatman steers the boat with a pole, providing information about local history and sights, and sometimes even performing boat songs, allowing you to enjoy the picturesque scenery in all four seasons. This is a tourist destination that can also be visited to try the famous "steamed eel" and visit the Tachibana family mansion, "Ohana."

Highlights

  • Donko boats and boatman's guide/boat songs: A traditional boatman rowing with a pole and a boatman who entertains with commentary and songs.
  • Willow trees and canal scenery: The willows and old townscape reflected on the water's surface, and the thrill of passing under a low stone bridge.
  • Viewing historical buildings from the train window: You can get a close-up look at old houses, storehouses, traditional merchant houses, gardens, and more from the boat (the area around Onohana is particularly worth seeing).
  • Enjoy the different atmospheres of the four seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and the tranquility of winter.
  • Gourmet tour package: Another attraction is the opportunity to enjoy steamed eel and other local cuisine after the river cruise.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • By car: Approximately 1 hour from central Fukuoka (Tenjin/Hakata) (depending on road conditions). There are paid parking lots and tourist parking lots within the city, but the location of the parking lot varies depending on the boarding point, so it is recommended to check in advance.
  • Other: Many people visit on tourist buses or tours, and there are several main boarding points in the city center, so please check which boarding point you will be using before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Duration of the river trip: Generally, each trip takes about 40 to 60 minutes (varies depending on the route).
  • Overall tour time: Approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, including river boating, walking around the area, and meals. If you plan to visit the museum, such as Onohana, it is recommended to allow half a day (3 to 4 hours).

Nearby spots

  • Local restaurants: There are many restaurants that specialize in steamed eel. Try the local speciality along with your river cruise.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Busy periods: The boat is crowded during the cherry blossom season in spring, Golden Week, the consecutive autumn holidays, and summer vacation. There may be long waits to board, especially on weekends and public holidays, so we recommend making a reservation in advance and arriving early.
  • Reservations and Meeting Places: If you are traveling as a group or want to make sure you get on the boat, there are some operators that allow you to make reservations in advance, so be sure to check. Be sure to check the boarding point and departure time in advance.
  • Clothing and belongings: The boat is susceptible to wind, so it may feel chilly depending on the season. You may get wet in rainy weather, so be sure to bring rain gear. In summer, don't forget to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Manners: The boat is narrow and swaying. Please be considerate of other passengers and the boatman by not standing or walking, following instructions when boarding and disembarking, and taking your trash with you. Please refrain from excessively interrupting the boatman's explanations or songs.
  • Operation status: Operations may be changed or canceled depending on tide levels, bad weather, or river conditions. Please check the operation status on the official website or with the ferry operator before departure.
  • Photography: Please be considerate of the privacy of other passengers and local residents when taking photos. Be careful of your head when passing under low bridges.

(Note) Please check the latest information on operators and official tourist websites for specific boarding locations, operating times, fares, and whether group reservations are accepted. The scenery of Yanagawa's townscape and canals changes with the seasons, so try to find ways to enjoy it depending on the time of year you visit.
