Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kashiwajima is a small island (connected to the mainland) in Otsuki Town, Hata District, Kochi Prefecture, and a tourist destination in southwestern Shikoku known for its beautiful sea and rich ecosystem. With its crystal clear emerald green waters, colorful coral, and tropical fish, it is popular nationwide as a diving and snorkeling spot. The island itself is dotted with small settlements, fishing ports, guesthouses, and dive shops, and is attractive for its pristine scenery and local atmosphere.

Highlights

  • Underwater scenery (diving and snorkeling): The area is rich in biodiversity, including coral reefs, tropical fish, and sea slugs. The water is highly transparent, and there are plenty of spots to enjoy for everyone from beginners to advanced divers.
  • Beautiful coastline and beaches: The vivid colors of the shallow waters make for a photogenic landscape. Suitable for swimming and walking (please be aware of sea conditions).
  • Sunset and starry sky: The small population makes for a beautiful night sky. The sea is especially beautiful at dusk.
  • Local seafood: You can enjoy fresh seafood at guesthouses and restaurants near the fishing port (depending on the seasonal menu and the day's catch).
  • Bridge and village scenery:The island scenery, connected to the mainland by a small bridge, and the laid-back atmosphere of the fishing village are also part of its charm.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • plane: The nearest airport is Kochi Ryoma Airport, and it is convenient to rent a car from the airport.
  • Car (recommended)Access from Kochi City is generally via national and prefectural roads. Located in the southwestern part of Shikoku, the most convenient way to get around is by rental car. The island is connected to the mainland by a short bridge, and parking and dive shop shuttles are available.
  • public transportationPublic transportation (trains and buses) is often infrequent, so you'll need to transfer to local buses or other local transportation from the nearest major station or bus terminal. If you're planning on diving, many dive shops offer transportation from the nearest station or accommodation, so be sure to check and book in advance.
  • Points to note: There are some narrow sections and sections with many curves. Please drive carefully, especially at night or in the rain, and if using a rental car, please check the route in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: 3-6 hours (mainly marine activities)
  • If diving is included: Half a day to one day (usually two dives)
  • Relaxed stay (sightseeing + dining + stargazing): One night or more recommended

Nearby spots

  • Otsuki Town's fishing port and coastal walking area (enjoy local seafood and the atmosphere of a port town)
  • Local natural spots accessible by car (surrounding coastlines, observation decks, etc.)
  • Shimanto River area (tourist spots within driving distance. If you have time, you can also do a set tour)
  • Local roadside stations and tourist facilities (convenient for gathering information and local specialties)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: In the summer (especially July and August), the area gets crowded with people swimming and diving. Please make reservations for accommodation and diving well in advance.
  • Manners: Please be mindful of protecting the ocean by not touching the corals or other living creatures, not damaging the mooring ropes or the underwater environment, and taking any trash with you. When diving, please follow the instructions of your guide.
  • Sea conditions and weather: Some areas are susceptible to the effects of currents and waves. Tours may be canceled or changed depending on bad weather or sea conditions, so please check the latest information in advance.
  • Facilities and Shopping: There are often limited stores and convenience stores on the island and surrounding areas, so it's a good idea to stock up on drinks and other essentials in advance.
  • Seasonal precautions: Rain and muddy water are likely to occur during the rainy season, and the sea is likely to be rough during typhoon season (summer to autumn). Water temperatures fluctuate with the seasons, so please make sure you have wetsuits and other equipment.
  • Safety measures: Avoid unplanned snorkeling alone or walking along the coast at night, and make sure you have a means of communication and someone to accompany you in case of an emergency.

(Additional Information) Kashiwajima is a place full of natural attractions, but the surrounding transportation and facilities are by no means on a par with urban areas. If you are visiting specifically for diving, we recommend making arrangements in advance for accommodation, transportation, equipment rental, and guides.
