Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Cape Higashihennazaki is a long, narrow cape jutting out from the eastern edge of Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture, and is one of Miyakojima's most famous scenic spots. The coastline is made up of basalt and coral reefs, and the dynamic scenery with views stretching to the horizon is captivating. A lighthouse and promenade are located at the tip of the cape, from which you can enjoy an open view sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea.
Historically, it has been a landmark on shipping routes, and the locals have had a long-standing connection with maritime traffic and fishing. The light here changes depending on the season and time of day, making it a particularly popular spot for photographing sunrises and sunsets.
Highlights
- A magnificent panorama from the tip of the cape: the contrast between the endless sea and horizon and the grasslands swaying in the breeze is beautiful.
- Lighthouse and promenade: There are walking paths around the lighthouse, where you can take a leisurely stroll and feel the sea breeze. There are also many photo spots.
- Sunrise and sunset viewing: Facing east, the sunrise is exceptional. At dusk, the colors of the sky and sea change dramatically.
