Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sapporo Art Park is a comprehensive arts facility and outdoor sculpture park located in Minami Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido. Opened in 1986, it takes advantage of the naturally rich hilly terrain to integrate an art museum, outdoor sculpture garden, atelier, experience workshop, outdoor stage, and more. Its major features include permanent and special exhibitions scattered across the vast grounds, sculptures that blend in with the seasonal scenery, support for artists through creative support facilities, and citizen-participation workshops.

The attractions of the park include the opportunity to view contemporary art and sculptures up close in the natural surroundings, the wide range of hands-on programs available for children and adults alike, and the opportunity to relax in an outdoor space that changes with the seasons.

Highlights

  • Outdoor Sculpture GardenThe outdoor sculptures scattered throughout the spacious park offer a sense of scale and harmony with nature. It's fun to discover art while strolling around.
  • Sapporo Art Park Museum(Permanent and special exhibitions): Domestic and international art exhibitions, as well as exhibitions by local artists, are held. The exhibits change regularly, making it worth repeat visits.
  • Creative Workshops and Experience ProgramsThere are hands-on classes in pottery, glass, woodworking, and more, some of which require advance reservations and some on the day (fees apply).
  • Atelier/production support facility: A facility that supports artists in creating and presenting their work, and occasionally hosts public workshops and events.
  • Outdoor Stage Events: Outdoor music and theater performances are sometimes held here, so it's a good idea to check the seasonal event information.
  • Nature walks and seasonal sceneryThe scenery changes with the seasons, from fresh greenery and flowers to autumn leaves and snowy scenery, and there are plenty of photo spots.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: The facility may be crowded on weekends, public holidays, event days, and during peak tourist seasons (spring outings, summer vacation, autumn foliage season). Experience programs may fill up quickly, so we recommend making reservations in advance.
  • Manners: Touching some outdoor sculptures is prohibited. Please follow the instructions of the staff and do not get too close to the artworks, walk only on designated paths, and check whether photography is permitted.
  • Pets: Although you may be able to walk around outside, entry into the museum and exhibition rooms may be restricted. Please check in advance if you are bringing pets.
  • Season/Clothing: Hokkaido's climate is changeable, and in winter, snow and ice can make it difficult to walk outdoors. Be sure to bring warm clothing and non-slip shoes. Even in summer, it can be cool in the mornings and evenings.
  • Check facility information: Exhibits, opening hours, closing days, availability of hands-on classes, and prices are subject to change at any time. Please check the official website or call the museum before visiting for the latest information.
