Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Akashi Castle is the remains of a castle in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture, and is currently maintained as the central historic site of Akashi Park. Built in the early Edo period (around 1619), the flat castle was considered an important base for maritime traffic on the Seto Inland Sea and for the defense of Harima Province. The castle tower no longer exists, and much of the castle was lost due to the castle abolition order and air raids during the Meiji period, but the stone walls, moat, parts of the turret (restored and preserved buildings), and remains of the gate remain, making it a popular park that is easy to stroll around.
Its charm lies in the fusion of historical remains and a place for local residents to relax. You can enjoy a whole day here, taking in the wide lawns, rows of cherry blossom trees, seasonal events, and adjacent facilities (such as a planetarium). Another attraction is sampling local delicacies like Akashiyaki (egg omelet) and seafood.
