Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Nihondaira Yume Terrace is an observation facility located in Nihondaira, Shizuoka City. Nihondaira is a plateau at an elevation of approximately 200-300 meters, and has long been popular as a scenic spot offering panoramic views of Suruga Bay, the Izu Peninsula, Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, and more. Yume Terrace is an observation deck built to take advantage of the magnificent views, and is characterized by its open design that makes use of wood and woodgrain accents.

Its greatest appeal is its 360-degree panoramic view. On clear days, Mount Fuji is clearly visible, and the evening and night views are also popular. While you can casually enjoy the scenery, there are also many historical and cultural tourist sites in the surrounding area (such as Kunozan Toshogu Shrine), making it a convenient base for strolls and short trips.

Highlights

  • Panoramic view of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay: Depending on the weather, this is a spectacular spot where you can get a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, and the Izu Peninsula.
  • Sunrise, sunset, and night view: Many photographers and tourists visit especially in the evening. At night, you can also enjoy the night view of Shizuoka city.
  • Observation deck design: Decks and benches made from a combination of wood and metal are provided, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the view.
  • Walking trails and rest areas: There are walking trails, benches, toilets and other facilities in the surrounding area, making it a great place for a short break or a picnic.
  • Ropeway connection (nearby sightseeing): You can access Kunozan Toshogu Shrine by using the nearby Nihon-daira Ropeway, making it easy to plan your sightseeing route.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest public transportation: JR Shizuoka Station is the starting point. From Shizuoka Station, the most common ways to get there are by bus (towards Nihondaira) or taxi. Routes and times vary depending on the season, so please check in advance.
  • Access by car: Accessible from the interchanges of the Tomei Expressway and the Shin-Tomei Expressway. Parking is available in the surrounding area, making it convenient for sightseeing by car (parking may incur a fee).
  • Ropeway: The Nihon-daira Ropeway runs from the Nihon-daira area and connects to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. It is efficient to combine these two routes.
  • Please note: Public transportation is infrequent at certain times, so depending on your arrival time, you may want to consider taking a taxi or car. There is some walking from the pavement and parking lot to the observation deck.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short time (30 minutes to 1 hour): Just enough time to enjoy the view and take photos.
  • Standard (1.5-2 hours): This tour includes time to enjoy the scenery, explore the surrounding area, and have a snack.
  • Relaxing (half a day to a full day): Combine with sightseeing in the surrounding area, such as appreciating the sunset and night views, or taking the ropeway to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine.

Nearby spots

  • Kunozan Toshogu Shrine: A shrine associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu. A round trip on the Nihon-daira Ropeway is a popular tourist route.
  • Miho no Matsubara: A scenic spot registered as a World Heritage Site. It is famous for the sea breeze and the view of Mt. Fuji (it is convenient to travel by car).
  • Shimizu Port and S-Pulse Dream Plaza area: Plenty of seaside shopping and dining spots.
  • Art museums and famous tea spots in Shizuoka City: The Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art and other tea-related facilities are easy to include in your sightseeing route.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded on weekends, public holidays, and in the evenings at sunset. When taking photos, please remember to follow the rules regarding the use of tripods and be considerate of other visitors.
  • Weather and visibility: The appearance of Mount Fuji and other sights changes significantly depending on the weather and seasonal winds. Early spring and autumn often have good visibility, but in summer it can be difficult to see due to haze and the effects of the rainy season.
  • Clothing and cold weather: As the area is on high ground, there may be strong winds on some days, so please take measures to protect yourself from the cold, especially after evening hours and in winter.
  • Facility opening and closing times: Observation decks are generally open to the public, but on-site facilities and services may have opening hours. It is recommended to check official information in advance.
  • Nature and Environmental Protection: Please take care to protect the surrounding natural environment by taking your trash with you and not damaging vegetation or fences.
  • Use of drones, etc.: There may be restrictions in the observation area and surrounding areas. Please check the rules before flying a drone, etc.

This concludes our guide to Nihondaira Yume Terrace. When planning your visit, it's a good idea to check the opening hours, bus schedules, and parking information on the local official website or the latest information from transportation companies. Enjoy the beautiful view!
