Hinomisaki Lighthouse is a chalk-white lighthouse located in Hinomisaki, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. It is a popular tourist spot offering a magnificent panoramic view of the cliffs jutting out into the sea and the Sea of Japan. Built during the Meiji period, it is known for its imposing appearance and height (approximately 43.6m), making it one of the tallest lighthouses in Japan. Combined with the surrounding rugged scenery, the lighthouse offers beautiful evening and morning views, making it a popular spot for photography and strolls.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

• Nearest major station: JR Izumo-shi Station (Izumo City)
• Public transportation: From Izumo Station, take the local bus (bound for Todai/Hinomisaki) for approximately 30-50 minutes. There aren't many buses, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance. Taking a taxi will shorten the journey time.
• By car: Take the San'in Expressway or national highway and it will take about 30 minutes from the center of Izumo city. There is a parking lot (both paid and free) on-site, but it can get crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons.
• From the airport: Approximately 30 to 50 minutes by car from Izumo Enmusubi Airport (depending on traffic conditions).

• Short course: If you just want to see the exterior of the lighthouse and the surrounding area, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
• A leisurely stroll: Approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours including a tour of the inside of the lighthouse, a visit to Hinomisaki Shrine, and a stroll along the coast.
• If you combine it with sightseeing in the surrounding area: We recommend a half-day to full-day plan that includes a visit to Izumo Taisha Shrine and other places.

• Hinomisaki Shrine: Located near the lighthouse, this historic shrine enshrines the guardian deity of the sea. The vermilion-lacquered shrine building and the seascape are highlights.
• Inasa Beach: A beach close to Izumo Taisha Shrine where you can enjoy sunsets and mythological scenery.
• Izumo Taisha Shrine: Approximately 30 minutes by car. Many people combine this with other popular sightseeing spots in Shimane.
• Local seafood restaurants: There are many restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan.

• Crowds: It tends to get crowded on weekends, consecutive holidays, and at sunset. Parking lots and observation areas may fill up and become crowded early.
• Weather and cold weather: The Sea of Japan side has many windy days and is particularly cold in winter. Be sure to take measures to protect yourself from the wind and cold. Visits may be restricted in rainy weather or high waves.
• Safety: Cliffs and rocky areas are slippery and dangerous. Please be careful not to go outside the fences and wear good footwear.
• Manners: The area around the lighthouse is a place where nature and the shrine coexist. Please take your trash with you and refrain from yelling or other behavior that may cause inconvenience to others. When visiting the shrine, please also be mindful of proper etiquette.
• Transportation: There are times when the number of buses running is limited. It is a good idea to check the return bus schedule and taxi arrangements in advance.
