Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shibata Castle is a castle ruin located in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, which flourished during the Edo period as the seat of government for the Shibata Domain. While retaining its foundations from the Sengoku period, it was developed during the Edo period by the domain's lord, Mizoguchi, and has the elements of a typical flatland castle (a castle built on flat land), surrounded by moats and earthworks. The area around the main enclosure has now been developed as a castle park, where historical buildings such as turrets and gates remain, and it is also known as a famous spot for viewing cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, making it popular with locals and tourists alike.

Highlights
