Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shinjuku Suehirotei is one of the traditional "yose" (vaudeville theaters) in Shinjuku, Tokyo, where you can enjoy rakugo and other vaudeville arts (rakugo, manzai, storytelling, variety shows, etc.) on a daily basis. It has inherited the tradition of vaudeville culture that was born in the Taisho and Showa periods, and is beloved as a long-established theater with roots in the local community. The close distance between the stage and the seats means you can enjoy the expressions and timing of the performers up close, which is a major attraction, and you can feel the power and warm atmosphere of live traditional performing arts.

Highlights

  • Live Rakugo: Enjoy the performances of famous Rakugo performers known as Shinuchi and young performers up close. The meticulous expressions and use of props in the storytelling are highlights.
  • A wide variety of performances: In addition to rakugo, a variety of performances are scheduled every day, including manzai, storytelling, magic tricks, and music (songs), so you'll never get bored.
  • The unique atmosphere of a vaudeville theater: a sense of unity among the audience and a lively atmosphere where the performers interact with the audience. After the show, the performers sometimes greet the audience from the stage.
  • Convenience: It's a relatively reasonable price and you can see multiple performances in a short space of time, making it a great choice for those looking for a first-time yose experience.
