Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Ena Gorge is a scenic spot in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, known for its gorge scenery dotted with oddly shaped rocks and small islands formed by the erosion of the Kiso River. The sheer rock walls, rock formations resembling folding screens, and lush mountain streams change appearance with the seasons, attracting many tourists especially during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves. You can tour the gorge on a pleasure boat, experiencing up close the scale and impact that cannot be achieved by simply viewing it from the shore. There are also vantage points in the surrounding area, such as the Enakyo Bridge and observation decks, making it a great place for drives, strolls, and photography.

- Ena Gorge Sightseeing Boat: A regular route that goes around the gorge. You can get a close-up look at the strange rock formations and small islands from the boat, and enjoy the scenery that changes with the seasons (the journey takes about 30-40 minutes).
- The strange rock formations, including Byobu Rock, line the shoreline and their unique rock formations are a highlight. There are many photo spots.
- Enakyo Bridge Observation Deck: A viewpoint from which you can get a panoramic view of the entire gorge and the sightseeing boat route. The evening scenery and autumn colors are beautiful.
- Seasonal scenery: Each season shows a different look, with cherry blossoms and fresh greenery in spring, deep green in summer, autumn leaves, and the tranquil scenery of winter.
- Nearby walking trails and parks: There are walking trails and rest areas where you can enjoy nature at your own pace.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Train + Bus/Taxi: Get off at Ena Station on the JR Chuo Main Line. From the station, it takes about 15 to 30 minutes by local bus, tourist shuttle, or taxi to get to Ena Gorge (local buses run infrequently, so it is recommended to check the timetable).
- By car: From the Chuo Expressway, heading towards Nakatsugawa, use the Ena IC or Enakyo Smart IC. Parking is available around Enakyo (fees may apply). From Nagoya, it takes about an hour, but this may vary depending on traffic conditions and your departure point.
- Expressway service area: There is also a great view from the Enakyo Service Area on the Chuo Expressway, so you can stop by for a break.
- Cruise ship boarding point: Please follow the tourist information and signs to find the boarding point for the Ena Gorge cruise ship. Operating times and number of trips vary depending on the season, so we recommend checking in advance.

- Iwamura Castle (Iwamura-cho, Ena City): Enjoy the atmosphere of a castle town and the castle ruins (approximately 30 minutes by car, time may vary depending on the route).
- Akechi Castle Town (Akechi Town): Historic townscape and local tourist attractions.
- Hot springs and local restaurants around Nakatsugawa and Ena: Ena and Nakatsugawa are famous for their specialties such as chestnut kinton, making them great places to go on a food tour or relax in a hot spring.
- Central Alps and surrounding hiking trails: Enjoy sightseeing while taking in the mountain scenery.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The area is particularly crowded during the autumn foliage season (usually from late October to mid-November), on weekends, and on public holidays. Parking lots are expected to fill up and sightseeing boats are expected to be crowded, so we recommend arriving early, using public transportation, and making reservations in advance (if possible).
- Operation and Weather: Cruise boats may be canceled in bad weather or when the water level is high. Please check the operation information before departing.
- Clothing and footing: When boarding the sightseeing boat or walking around, there are unpaved areas, stairs, and slippery areas. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the season.
- Nature Conservation and Manners: Please be sure to take your trash with you and do not damage plants or rocks. Please be mindful of safety by not entering restricted areas and following the instructions of the boat crew.
- Accessibility: Some areas have many steps and stairs, making it difficult to move around with a wheelchair or stroller. Please check the facility's accessibility information in advance.
