Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Gumyoji Temple is a local landmark known for its historic temple in Minami Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and the shopping street that runs along the approach to the temple. Ancient legends remain about the temple's founding, and it is said to have a long history linked to the worship of the local guardian deity and Kannon. The combination of the tranquil atmosphere of the temple grounds and the lively shopping street (Gumyoji Shopping Street) on the approach to the temple is an appealing spot where you can get a feel for the lifestyle and culture of the local residents.

Highlights

  • Strolling around the temple grounds: The area around the main hall and temple gate has a quiet and calming atmosphere. You can pray and find peace of mind (the area that can be visited varies depending on the season).
  • Approach to the shrine and Gumyoji shopping street: An arcade-style shopping street continues from the approach to the shrine, lined with traditional delicatessens, confectionery shops, clothing stores, and more. Enjoy sampling local delicacies and exploring the local cuisine.
  • Seasonal scenery: During the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, the temple grounds and surrounding area are colored, making it a recommended photo spot.
  • Local festivals and events: Every year, temple and shrine-related events and shopping district events are held, creating a lively atmosphere (the dates change each year).
  • Gumyoji Park: A small park near the temple, perfect for a stroll or a break.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The temple is crowded with worshippers and shoppers on weekends, during festivals and events, and during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Please be careful of your footing and valuables when it is crowded.
  • Pedestrian space: There are many pedestrians along the approach to the shrine and the shopping district, and in some places the passage is narrow. Please be careful not to obstruct other pedestrians when using strollers or large luggage.
  • Manners within the temple grounds: Whether or not photography is permitted in the worship hall and main hall depends on the location, so please follow the signs. Please be quiet while visiting, wear a hat, and refrain from speaking loudly.
  • Eating, drinking, and smoking: Eating and drinking are permitted in the stores in the shopping arcade, but please take any trash you leave behind with you or to designated areas. Smoking within the temple grounds is considered bad manners.
  • Cash: Some small shops in the shopping district only accept cash, so it's a good idea to have some coins ready to make things go smoothly.
  • Access Note: If you are visiting by car, we recommend using public transportation as the surrounding roads are narrow and parking is limited.
