Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Nusamai Bridge is a representative bridge over the Kushiro River that flows through downtown Kushiro, Hokkaido, and is one of the city's landmarks. The name "Nusamai" is said to be derived from the Ainu language, and remains a name linked to the history and nature of the region. The bridge connects the city and port town landscapes, and the beautiful morning and evening light and the scenery reflected on the river's surface make it a popular photo spot.

The area around Nusamai Bridge is equipped with walking paths, benches, and nighttime illuminations, making it a great place to stroll and enjoy the scenery. The sunrises and sunsets, as well as the early morning mist from the Kushiro River (flowing mist from the Kushiro Wetlands) create a particularly unique atmosphere and are loved by tourists and locals alike.

  • Crowds: The number of visitors coming to take photos increases in the mornings and evenings (especially at sunrise and sunset). When using tripods or other equipment, please be mindful not to obstruct other traffic.
  • Weather and clothing: Kushiro has strong sea breezes and can be chilly regardless of the season. In winter, we recommend taking measures to protect yourself from the cold and wearing non-slip shoes. Riverside areas can be slippery due to frost or ice.
  • Consideration for nature and wildlife: When observing wildlife (such as birds) in the vicinity, please observe quietly from a distance and do not feed them. Please follow the rules of the protected area.
  • Safety measures: Although there are many fences along the river, please be careful of your footing when taking photos, etc. Entering the river at night or crossing the fences is dangerous.
  • Use of drones, etc.: Flying drones without permission may violate local laws and regulations. Please check regulations and obtain permission before using drones.

Nusamai Bridge is one of the most iconic sights in Kushiro. Please enjoy the scenery, which changes with the seasons and time of day, while being mindful of safety and etiquette.
