Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Sankyo Soko is a group of iconic warehouses in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, a historic collection of storehouses built to store and trade rice harvested in the Shonai Plain. Developed as a base for rice distribution and trade from the Meiji to Taisho periods, the neatly lined rows of white-walled storehouses and the rows of trees (especially ginkgo trees) that line the front of the storehouses are known as tourist attractions. Currently, some of the warehouses have been developed into museums, souvenir shops, and tourist facilities, and the area is also popular as a place that conveys the industrial culture of the past.
Highlights
- The exterior of the storehouse and the trees lining the moat: The stately exterior of the storehouse with its white plaster walls and wooden construction, and the row of ginkgo trees lining the moat, show off different faces throughout the seasons. The yellow leaves in autumn are particularly spectacular.
- Shonai Rice History Museum (within the museum): Learn about the industrial history of the Shonai region through exhibits of materials related to rice cultivation and distribution in the region (please note that the availability and name of the facility may change, so it is recommended to check in advance).
- Souvenir shop and direct sales space: There are shops selling locally produced rice, sake, processed foods, crafts, and more, where you can purchase Shonai flavors and souvenirs.
- Photo spot: The linear rows of storehouses and the composition of the moat and row of trees make for great photos, so many tourists and camera enthusiasts visit the area.
- Strolling around the area: Starting from the warehouses, you can stroll around Sakata's historical areas, the port, and the riverside scenery.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The area is particularly crowded during the autumn foliage season and on weekends and holidays during the tourist season. Parking lots and photo spots are expected to be crowded, so please plan accordingly.
- Photography etiquette: Photography is welcome in tourist areas, but please be considerate to other visitors. There may be restrictions on photography inside commercial facilities, so please follow the signs.
- Facility opening hours and closing days: Facilities and stores within the building have different opening hours and closing days, so please check the official information before visiting.
- Seasonal clothing: In winter, the Shonai region experiences cold weather and snowfall. Please take precautions against the cold and be careful not to slip on slippery surfaces. From spring to autumn, tours will be mostly outdoors, so we recommend clothing appropriate for the weather and comfortable walking shoes.
- Consideration for the surrounding environment: The historic landscape of the warehouse complex is an attractive feature. Please be mindful of local rules, such as taking your trash with you and keeping noise to a minimum.
