Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kan'ei-ji Temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in the Ueno Park area of Taito Ward, Tokyo. Founded in 1625 (Kan'ei 2) by the monk Tenkai, it flourished as one of the family temples of the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo period. Built to protect the northeast (unlucky direction) of Edo Castle, it was a large temple complex with many halls, pagodas, and tombs, but much of it was burned down during the Boshin War (Ueno War) in 1868.

Today, the temple grounds are a quiet blend of nature and cultural facilities within Ueno Park, and together with historical sites such as Bentendo (the hall in Shinobazu Pond), Kiyomizu Kannondo, and Ueno Toshogu Shrine, it serves as a base for strolling. It is characterized by the coexistence of the weight of history and the charm of an oasis in the city.

Highlights

  • Bentendo (Shinobazu Pond Bentendo): A small chapel built in Shinobazu Pond. The view across the pond is beautiful, and you can worship while looking at the pond and birds.
  • Kiyomizu Kannon-do (Kiyomizu-do): Modeled after Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, it is located on a hill in Ueno and offers great views of the surrounding area.
  • Walking paths and stone monuments within the temple groundsStone Buddha statues and historical site signs are scattered around the area, reminiscent of the former grand temple complex, giving a sense of the history of the Edo and Meiji periods.
  • Collaboration with Ueno Toshogu Shrine and Ueno Park:You can also visit the neighboring Ueno Toshogu Shrine, Tokyo National Museum, Ueno Zoo, and other attractions.
  • Seasonal sceneryDuring cherry blossom season (late March to early April), the entire Ueno Park is bustling with visitors, and the autumn leaves are also beautiful.

  • Worship etiquetteTemples are religious facilities. Please observe general worship etiquette, such as not making loud noises, taking your trash with you, and treating incense and offerings in a way that does not disturb others.
  • photo shoot: Generally, photography is permitted within the temple grounds, but there may be areas around the principal image or hall where photography is prohibited. Please follow the posted notices and instructions of the staff.
  • Feet and steps: There are stairs, unpaved areas, and stone steps within the temple grounds. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
