Tomiwa Canal Kansui Park (Toyama City)

Fugan Canal Kansui Park is an urban waterfront park located along the canal that connects the center of Toyama City with the harbor. With its scenery reflected on the water's surface, a glass-walled cafe, seasonal flowers and illuminations, it's a popular spot for strolling and photography, and can be enjoyed along with the surrounding cultural facilities.

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Fugan Canal is a waterfront space created by redeveloping part of an area that was once used as a port and industrial zone. The development was carried out with the aim of bringing vitality back to the city, and a wide promenade, lawn plaza, benches, and walking paths were built, making the most of the canal's water surface. Adjacent to glass buildings and art museums, the area is attractive for its harmonious blend of art and nature. During the day, visitors can enjoy the view of the reflective water, and at dusk, the Toyama mountain range and evening scenery reflected in the canal, and at night, the illuminated waterfront can be enjoyed.

Highlights

  • Reflections on the water: The surrounding buildings and sky are reflected on the calm waters of the canal, making it a popular photo spot.
  • Cafe (glass-fronted store): There is a cafe overlooking the canal where you can relax and enjoy the view (the window seats are especially popular).
  • Toyama Glass Art Museum (adjacent): Enjoy art and the waterfront scenery at the same time through glass art exhibits and special exhibitions.
  • Lighting up and night view: During certain seasons and events, the area is lit up, creating a fantastical atmosphere that is different from the daytime.
  • Seasonal scenery: Cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and other seasonal changes are beautiful, making this a great place for a stroll.
  • Events: Flea markets, music events and other events are sometimes held here, making it a lively place.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • The nearest major transfer point is JR Toyama Station, which is easily accessible.
  • Walking: Approximately 15-25 minutes on foot from JR Toyama Station (depending on walking speed and route).
  • City trams and buses: It is convenient to use the city's trams and buses and get off at stops around the canal (stop names vary depending on the line, so please check before boarding).
  • Private car: There is a paid parking lot nearby, but it may be full on weekends or during events, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • By bicycle: It is also a good idea to use the city's cycling routes or rent a bicycle. Please note that there are many places where pedestrians have the right of way.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets crowded during the cherry blossom season in spring, on weekends, and during night illuminations and events. Window seats in the cafe tend to fill up quickly, so make sure you arrive early.
  • Manners: Pedestrians have the right of way in the park. Eating and drinking on the benches and grass is permitted only in permitted areas, and please take your trash with you or dispose of it in designated trash cans.
  • Pets: You may come to the park for a walk, but please be considerate of the surrounding area and clean up any smells or droppings. As a general rule, pets must be kept on a leash.
  • Water safety: Swimming is prohibited in the canal, so please keep an eye on children, especially those in the water.
  • Weather/season: In winter, snow and ice can make the sidewalks slippery, so be careful when walking. The canal scenery changes when it rains, but be sure to take precautions when walking.
  • Parking and Transportation: Parking lots may be congested during events, and traffic restrictions may be put in place. We recommend using public transportation or checking information in advance.
  • Facility opening hours: The adjacent museums and cafes have different opening hours, so please check the official website for the latest information before visiting.

Fugan Canal Kansui Park is a waterside oasis where you can enjoy the changing seasons even on a short stroll. Feel free to visit at your own pace, taking photos or just relaxing at the cafe.
