Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Toyama Castle (Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture) is a castle located in the center of Toyama Castle Ruins Park, and is a stately historic site remaining in the city. The castle's origins date back to the Sengoku period, and it was developed as a castle from the Azuchi-Momoyama period onwards. It is particularly known that Sassa Narimasa and others carried out the development of the castle, and it served as a feudal domain base during the Edo period. Many buildings were lost after the Meiji period, but the castle tower was rebuilt in 1954, and the interior is now open to the public as a local history museum.

Its distinctive features include the beautiful scenery of the castle ruins park with its moat and stone walls, the view of the city from the castle tower, and the seasonal charms of being a famous spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. It is a place of relaxation for local residents, as well as a spot where you can learn about the history and culture of the region.

Highlights

  • Castle tower (reconstructed castle tower): There are exhibits as a local museum, and you can see the history of Toyama, the changes in the castle, and local materials. The top floor is an observation space, and you can see the city of Toyama and the Tateyama mountain range (depending on the weather).
  • Stone walls and moats: The stone walls and moats within the castle ruins park convey the atmosphere of the time and are popular photo spots. The castle's reflection on the water is particularly picturesque.
  • Seasonal scenery: The cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves in autumn are beautiful, making it a great place for flower viewing and strolling. The area is sometimes lit up at night (please check the dates).
  • Historical exhibits: Learn about Toyama's history through materials related to the castle and the region, armor, ancient documents, and more (special exhibitions are sometimes held).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Toyama Station, about 15-20 minutes on foot (1.2 km), or 5-10 minutes by taxi.
  • Tram: Take the Toyama City tram (Toyama Light Rail/Toyama Chiho Railway) and get off at stops such as "Kencho-mae" or "City Hall-mae," then it's just a few minutes' walk to the venue (please check the route map for the route and stop names).
  • By car: Take the Hokuriku Expressway to Toyama IC or take the national highway. There are paid parking lots and municipal parking lots around the castle, but due to limited space, we recommend using public transportation during peak seasons.
  • Air: It takes about 30 minutes by bus or car from Toyama Airport to the city center.

  • Manners in the exhibition rooms: Eating, drinking, and flash photography may be prohibited inside the museum. Do not touch the exhibits. Check the detailed rules at the entrance.
  • Walking environment: There are stone steps and uneven ground in the park, which can be slippery on rainy days. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you are using a stroller or wheelchair, please check the route in advance.
  • Opening hours: The opening hours, closing days, and admission fees for the castle tower (local museum) are subject to change. Please check the official website or the city's tourist information in advance for the latest information.
  • Seasonal notes: In winter, there may be snow and frozen roads, so please be careful when dressing and moving around. In summer, the temperature may rise, so please be sure to stay hydrated.

(Note) Toyama Castle is located in the city, so we recommend combining your sightseeing with touring the surrounding art museums, parks, and shopping areas. It's a good idea to check opening times and public transportation information before your visit.
