Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Menuma Shodenzan (also known as Kankiin Shoden) is a historic Buddhist temple located in Menuma, Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture. It has attracted local worshippers since ancient times and is particularly known as the temple dedicated to "Shoten (Kankiten)." The architecture of the main hall and Shoden Hall, among others, is splendid with its carvings and vibrantly colored decorations, and its greatest appeal is the continuation of craftsmanship that has continued since the Edo period. In addition to worship, many tourists visit the temple to admire the buildings and carvings, and it is also a popular photo spot.

Highlights

  • The intricate carvings and colorful decorations of the Seitendo Hall (around the main hall): Carvings based on animals, plants, and legends adorn the building.
  • Atmosphere of the temple grounds: The old trees, stone lanterns, and the charm of the approach to the temple create a tranquil atmosphere.
  • Prayers and benefits: Many worshippers come to pray for prosperity in business, safety in the home, and finding love.
  • Seasonal scenery: The scenery changes with the seasons, from fresh greenery to autumn leaves, and is a great place for photography.

  • Worship etiquette: Please remain quiet inside the main hall and worship hall. Please follow the temple's instructions regarding incense and candles, offerings, and clapping etiquette.
