Megijima (Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture) — Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)
Megijima is a small inhabited island in the Seto Inland Sea, a short trip from Takamatsu Port. Locals also call it "Onigashima" (Demon Island), and it is notable for its connection to the legend of the demon island in the folktale "Momotaro." The island boasts a group of caves dug during World War II (open to the public as tourist caves), an old fishing village-like streetscape, and hiking trails where you can enjoy the sea and island scenery. In recent years, it has also become a venue for exhibiting works for the Setouchi International Art Festival (Setouchi Triennale), and is a popular tourist destination where art, legend, and nature coexist.
Highlights
- Onigashima Cave (Megi Cave): The most famous spot on the island. Tunnels and caves dug during the war have been renovated for tourism, and you can enjoy the demon statues and exhibits related to legends installed inside the caves. It is cool and recommended for a stroll in the summer.
- Stroll through the island's villages and alleyways: The narrow alleys, old houses, and fishing port scenery retain the atmosphere of a fishing village. It's perfect for a leisurely stroll and taking photos.
- Views and hiking: From the small hill on the island (the observation point or lookout point), you can see Takamatsu city and the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea islands. You can enjoy the view after a short climb.
- Swimming and playing on the rocks (seasonal): There are small beaches and rocky shores, and people enjoy swimming in the sea in the summer. However, there are few facilities, so be prepared.
- Setouchi Artworks: During the Setouchi Triennale and permanent art exhibits are scattered throughout the area, and many people visit for the purpose of art touring.
- Local cuisine and souvenirs: You can buy seafood dishes unique to the fishing port, processed products from the island, and souvenirs with an oni motif (although there are only a few stores).

- Facilities and stores only: There are only a limited number of restaurants and shops on the island, so we recommend checking in advance and bringing your own lunch and drinks (you will often need cash).
- Comfortable clothes for walking:There are many slopes and stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. In summer, the sun can be strong, so don't forget to bring a hat and stay hydrated.
- Seasonal cautionIn summer, take precautions against high temperatures, strong UV rays, and insects (mosquitoes). Be aware that flights may be canceled or temporarily suspended during typhoon season.
- Manners: The island is also a place for people to live. Please be considerate of local residents by taking your trash with you, not entering private property or restricted areas, and being considerate of noise and shouting.
- safety:The cave is dark and has steps. There are also wet and slippery areas, so be careful where you step. Swimming on the shore is often unsupervised, so do so at your own risk.
(Note) Operating times, admission fees, opening hours, and whether or not there are art exhibitions change depending on the season.
