Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Amami Oshima (Amami City, Kagoshima Prefecture) is the central island of the Nansei Islands, and is a scenic tourist destination with subtropical nature and a unique culture. In the past, it was influenced by Ryukyu culture and Satsuma (Kagoshima Domain), and a unique island culture developed there. After being under US control for a while after the war, it was returned to the mainland in 1953.

Its distinctive features include mangrove forests, subtropical rainforests, crystal clear coral reefs, and rare endemic species (such as the Amami rabbit). In 2021, Amami Oshima and other islands were registered as a World Heritage Site, drawing attention to the balance between nature conservation and tourism. Local culture and cuisine, including Shimauta (island songs), Oshima Tsumugi silk, brown sugar, Keihan (chicken rice), and brown sugar shochu, are also major attractions.

Highlights

  • Kinsakubaru virgin forest: A primeval forest of subtropical evergreen broad-leaved trees. A habitat for rare plants and animals, the walking trails and observation tours are popular.
  • Mangrove forest (around Sumiyo and Kasari): You can observe them up close by canoeing or on the promenade. The scenery of the tidal flats and river mouths is beautiful.
  • Cape Ayamaru and Cape Kasari: A viewing spot on the east coast. Enjoy spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and sunrises and sunsets.
  • Tomori Beach and Ohama Seaside Park: White sand beaches. Some areas are known for sea turtles laying eggs, making them suitable for swimming and snorkeling.
  • Amami Park (Amami Village): A facility where you can learn about the island's nature and culture. There are exhibits and opportunities to experience Oshima Tsumugi.
  • Naze (Naze) city area: A port town atmosphere with a concentration of local restaurants and souvenir shops. You can also enjoy tours of brown sugar confectionery and shochu breweries.
  • Day trip boat to Kakeroma Island: You can stroll around the village on this scenic remote island and enjoy swimming in the sea (separate ferry service required).

Access (nearest airport, transportation, etc.)

  • Air: The gateway to Amami Oshima is Amami Airport (ASJ). Direct flights are available from Kagoshima, Okinawa (Naha), Osaka, Tokyo (varies depending on route and season), etc. From the airport to Naze (center of Amami city) is approximately a 30-40 minute drive (depending on traffic conditions).
  • sea route: Regular ferries (including night services) and high-speed boats operate from Kagoshima Port. The travel time varies greatly depending on the type of boat and the route, and can take anywhere from a few hours to over 10 hours.
  • Traveling within the island: Local buses operate mainly in Naze, but there are not many. Renting a car is the most convenient way to get around for sightseeing (advance reservations recommended). Taxis and sightseeing bus tours are also available.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: It is possible to fly round trip and have a quick look around the Naze area, but it will be hectic considering the travel time.
  • 2 days, 1 night: A standard plan to enjoy the main spots around Naze and nearby beaches.
  • Days 3-5: Perfect for leisurely enjoying nature, beaches, and culture in the northern and southern parts of the island, as well as outlying islands (such as Kakeroma Island).
  • More than one week: For those who want to take their time with diving, trekking, and visiting remote islands.

Nearby spots

  • Kakeroma Island(Access by ferry): A remote island with beautiful views of traditional villages and bays. Ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
  • Other islands in the Amami Islands (Tokunoshima, Kikaijima, Okinoerabujima, etc.): Islands that can be reached by ferry or plane. Each has its own unique nature and culture.
  • Tourist facilities around Amami Park: There are many spots where you can experience culture, such as Oshima Tsumugi-related facilities and folk museums.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Nature Conservation and Manners: World Heritage sites, sea turtles during breeding season, and rare animals (such as Amami rabbits) are strictly protected. Please be sure to follow all restrictions and regulations, and observe proper etiquette, such as not taking any coral or shells home with you or feeding the wild animals.
  • Typhoons and Weather: During typhoon season (June to October, especially August to September), weather conditions are prone to sudden changes and flight cancellations. Please check the weather forecast and flight information before traveling, and plan your trip with ample time to spare.
  • Transportation/Movement: There are limited bus services. For sightseeing, it is convenient to rent a car or use a tour. The island's roads are in mountainous areas and can be narrow and winding in some places, so please drive safely.
  • Medical care and shoppingMedical facilities and large supermarkets are concentrated in central areas such as Naze. Pharmacies and ATMs may be scarce on remote islands and in the suburbs, so it's a good idea to prepare anything you need in advance.
  • Light, mosquito protection, and UV protection: Due to the subtropical climate, UV rays are strong and there are many mosquitoes. Please bring sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent.
  • congestionGolden Week, summer vacation, and long weekends are crowded with tourists, and accommodations and rental cars fill up quickly. We recommend making reservations early, especially for flights to remote islands.

— Travel Tips —
On your first day of arrival, enjoy local cuisine (chicken rice and dishes made with brown sugar) in Naze, followed by a live performance of island songs in the evening, allowing you to fully experience the unique atmosphere of Amami. Combining nature observation, diving, and touring remote islands such as Kakeroma Island will make for a fulfilling stay.
