Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Daisetsu is a vast mountain range that stretches across central Hokkaido and is the core of Daisetsuzan National Park. The area of Kamikawa Town, Kamikawa District, includes the northern and middle slopes of Mount Daisetsu, and offers a diverse range of natural landscapes, including deep valleys (such as Sounkyo), alpine flower fields, marshes, virgin forests, and volcanic landforms. Historically, it was a living area for the Ainu people, and in modern times it has developed as a tourist destination through exploration, mountain climbing, and the development of hot springs.

The area's charm lies in the changing nature of each season. The short changes of the seasons are condensed into one experience: alpine plants and trekking in summer, vibrant autumn foliage in autumn, snow and ice formations and hot springs in winter, and the contrast between lingering snow and fresh greenery in spring. Another major advantage for tourists is that they can enjoy the untouched wilderness from relatively accessible hot spring resorts and lodges.

Highlights

  • Sounkyo and the valley scenery: Sheer cliffs, clear streams, and waterfalls (such as Ginga and Ryusei Falls) are some of the most notable features. There are plenty of walking trails and observation points along the gorge.
  • Alpine plants and wetlands: The colorful flower fields in summer can be easily observed even on beginner trekking trails.
  • Autumn foliage: The canyons and mountainsides turn a stunning color between late September and early October. The autumn tourist season is especially popular.
  • Hot Springs: There is Sounkyo Onsen and the surrounding hot spring resorts, and many accommodations offer views of the mountains while bathing.
  • Mountain climbing and trekking: There are a variety of courses available, from beginner trails to ridge walks and peak hunting. Choose one that suits your physical strength (some routes include overnight stays in mountain huts).
  • Winter attractions: Illuminated icefalls, snowy scenery, snowshoe trekking and other winter activities.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

*The following is a guideline. Travel time and operation conditions may vary depending on the departure point and season, so please check the latest timetables and road information in advance.

  • Nearest major station: JR Kamikawa Station (Kamikawa Town). Kamikawa Station can be accessed by train from the Asahikawa area (approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour by train from Asahikawa).
  • Bus: Express buses and local buses run from Asahikawa Station to Sounkyo (takes about 1.5 to 2 hours). Municipal buses and tourist buses are also convenient for getting to various tourist spots in Kamikawa Town.
  • By car: Approximately 1-2 hours from Asahikawa via national and prefectural roads (depending on the route and weather). Be careful of frozen roads and snow accumulation in the Sounkyo area in winter.
  • Airport: Asahikawa Airport is the nearest airport, and it takes about an hour by car. From Sapporo (New Chitose), it takes even longer by highway or train.
  • Access to the mountain range: There are routes to the higher elevations from hot spring areas at the foot of the mountain (such as Sounkyo Onsen) as well as ropeways, lifts, and trailheads. Please check in advance as services may be closed on certain days or for inspections.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip (walking around Sounkyo, seeing the waterfalls, bathing in hot springs): half a day to a full day
  • Beginner's guide to trekking (highland walks and short hikes): half a day to one day
  • Full-scale mountain climbing (including climbing the ridges and peaks of Daisetsuzan and staying in mountain huts): 2 days and 1 night to several days (depending on the course)
  • Relaxed stay (relaxing at a hot spring inn + sightseeing in the area): 1-2 nights

Nearby spots

  • Sounkyo Onsen: A hot spring town that serves as a base for tourism. It offers a wide range of accommodation, meals, and souvenirs.
  • Ginga Ryusei Falls: A representative waterfall of Sounkyo. Can be viewed from the observation deck.
  • Other trailheads and hot spring areas in Daisetsuzan National Park: There are many access points to the surrounding mountains, such as Mt. Asahidake, Mt. Kurodake, and Mt. Ishikaridake.
  • Kamikawa Town's local tourist facilities and local museum: Spots where you can learn about the local nature and culture.
  • Asahiyama Zoo (Asahikawa City): A popular tourist destination accessible by car (popular with families).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Sudden changes in weather: The weather in mountainous areas can change suddenly, with fog, strong winds, and snowfall occurring in a short period of time. Please check the weather forecast before setting out and prepare waterproof and warm clothing.
  • Clothing and equipment: The temperature will be low in the alpine zone, so prepare layers of clothing, rain gear, snacks, a headlamp, etc. It is safer to inform your family and accommodation of your hiking plans.
  • Bears and other wild animals: There are areas where brown bears live, so please avoid traveling alone and take thorough measures to protect yourself from wild animals, such as making noise (using bells, etc.) and making sure to take all your trash with you.
  • Winter dangers: During the snowy season, there is a risk of getting lost or being caught in avalanches, so crampons, ice axes, and knowledge of avalanche prevention measures are necessary. Avoid risky behavior and consider going with a guide.
  • Crowds and accommodation: Accommodations and roads are congested during the autumn foliage season and long weekends. Please make reservations for accommodation and transportation early.
  • Nature conservation and etiquette: In national parks, collecting plants, camping outside designated areas, and open fires may be prohibited. Please observe basic etiquette, such as staying on the trail and taking your trash with you.
  • Facility operations: Ropeways, lifts, hiking trails, and mountain huts are open only during certain seasons or are closed for inspections. Please check the official information beforehand to confirm the operation status.

This concludes our overview and tourist information for the Daisetsuzan area around Kamikawa Town. Plan your itinerary and equipment according to your purpose (relaxing in hot springs, viewing autumn leaves, or alpine trekking), and enjoy a safe and comfortable experience in nature.
