Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Ohori Park is a public park centered around a large pond in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City. It was created by developing the "Ohori" (large moat), which originated from the outer moat of Fukuoka Castle (Maizuru Park). The water area used for the castle's defenses was developed as an urban park from the Meiji to Taisho periods, and opened to the public as the park we see today in the 1920s. The large pond, surrounding promenade, boat pond, Japanese garden, art museum and more all come together to create a place of relaxation for the public, where you can enjoy seasonal scenery (cherry blossoms, lotus flowers, autumn leaves, etc.) as well as jogging, strolling and boating.
Highlights
- Ohori (Boat Pond) / Circumferential Walkway: The promenade around the pond is about 2km long and is popular for jogging and walking. There are many runners in the early morning and evening.
- Boats (rental boats): Rowboats and swan-shaped (pedal) boats are available for rent, allowing you to enjoy the scenery from the pond (opening days vary depending on the season and weather).
- Fukuoka Art Museum: Located in the park, this museum hosts both permanent and special exhibitions. One of its attractions is how the museum's garden, buildings, and pond blend seamlessly into one landscape.
- Japanese Garden: The Japanese garden, located at one end of the pond, offers a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. It features a teahouse and seasonal plantings (admission fees may apply).
- Maizuru Park (Fukuoka Castle Ruins): You can also visit the Fukuoka Castle Ruins located to the north of the park. The views from the stone walls and castle ruins are also recommended.
- Seasonal events and nature: The scenery changes with the seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring, lotus flowers in summer, and autumn leaves. There are also plenty of photo spots.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

- Crowds: It gets very crowded during cherry blossom season, on holidays, and during events. There may be waiting times for boats and museums, so please make sure you leave with plenty of time.
- Manners: This is a pedestrian-only promenade. As there are joggers and cyclists, please observe basic park manners such as checking both sides and walking slowly, keeping dogs on leashes, and always picking up any waste.
- Smoking and Drinking: Smoking is permitted only in designated areas within the park, and in some areas is subject to city regulations. Please refrain from smoking on the street or leaving trash behind. Please be mindful of bringing alcohol and holding parties, and follow local government regulations.
- Boat use: Opening days are subject to weather conditions. Boats will be suspended in strong winds or rough weather, so please check the official information in advance. Please follow instructions, such as wearing a life jacket.
- Seasonal notes: Take precautions against the sun and heat in summer, and against the cold in winter. The best time to see the lotus flowers is early in the morning, and when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the area is packed with people.
- Safety precautions: The edges of the pond can be slippery in places. If you are bringing small children, please keep an eye on them. Drone flying and barbecues are often prohibited, so please check beforehand.
