Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Oboke and Koboke are valley areas formed by the erosion of the Yoshino River (Shikoku Saburo) that flows through Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture. The cliffs and strangely shaped rocks carved out by the rapids are a series of cliffs and strangely shaped rocks, and the names mean "big danger" and "small danger," and the area has long been known as a dangerous place for rapids. The beauty of the valley changes with the seasons, and is particularly captivating with the fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and blue mountain streams. Popular activities like river rafting and rafting make this a tourist destination where you can enjoy both natural scenery and thrilling experiences.

Highlights

  • Strange rocks and cliffs: The rock formations that rise along the Yoshino River and their columnar joints make for great photos. You can get a panoramic view of the entire valley from the observation point.
  • Pleasure boat (tourist boat): A leisurely tour of the gorge allows you to see the rock walls and currents up close from the river surface (travel time varies depending on the course).
  • Rafting/Kayaking: Experience the thrill of whitewater rafting on a rafting tour (spring to autumn is the main season). Plans for beginners are available.
  • Photo spots: Popular subjects include the scenery reflected on the river surface, early morning mist, sunsets, and autumn leaves.
  • Explore the surrounding nature: Enjoy hiking in the area, taking in the views from observation decks, and savoring local cuisine at nearby hot springs and restaurants.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Oboke Station (JR Shikoku Dosan Line) — From the station, you can walk or take a bus to the surrounding valley. Access to the Koboke area is generally by car or sightseeing boat.
  • Train: Accessible from Tokushima, Takamatsu, and Kochi by local trains and some limited express trains on the Dosan Line. Please check the timetable as there are not many trains.
  • By car: From Takamatsu or Tokushima, take National Route 32 or the Shikoku Expressway. Parking is available near the sightseeing boat dock and observation deck (it may be full during peak season).
  • Bus: Local buses and tourist buses may operate during the tourist season. We recommend checking the operating information in advance.
  • Local transportation: Wear comfortable walking shoes when exploring the canyon. There are also companies that provide transportation services for rafting and sightseeing boat trips (reservations required).

  • Sightseeing boat + stroll: 2-3 hours

Nearby spots

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Weather and safety: The Yoshino River is prone to flooding and rapids, so sightseeing boats and rafting may be canceled during rainy weather or when the river is flooded. Please check the operation status in advance.
  • Clothing and equipment: You don't have to worry about getting wet on a sightseeing boat, but you will get wet on rafting. You will need clothes that you don't mind getting wet, water-resistant shoes, a towel, and cold weather gear (depending on the season).
  • Crowds: During Golden Week, summer vacation, and autumn foliage season, the number of tourists increases, and parking lots and tours become crowded. Reservations are often required, especially for rafting.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Always take your trash with you and do not damage plants or rocks. Be careful not to slip and fall along the river, and observe from designated observation paths or observation decks.
  • Transportation: Please drive carefully as some sections have narrow roads and many curves. Public transportation is limited, so please check the timetable.
  • Mobile phone services/Facilities: Due to the mountainous area, there are some areas with weak mobile phone signals. There are not many restaurants or convenience stores.

Note: If you are planning to go rafting or take a sightseeing boat, it is a good idea to check the latest information and reservation status on the local official website or tourist office. Oboke and Koboke are some of the most scenic spots in Shikoku, so please enjoy the natural scenery while taking safety into consideration.
