Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park is a large national park located across the Akashi Strait in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture (along the coast with a view of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge). It features a large lawn with the sea and bridge as a backdrop, flowerbeds and gardens where you can enjoy flowers of all seasons, a children's playground and walking paths, and is popular with a wide range of people, including families, couples and photography enthusiasts. The surrounding area is home to tourist facilities such as Awaji Yumebutai and the Botanical Garden, making it a base for recreation and nature observation that takes advantage of the Akashi Strait scenery.

Highlights

  • View of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge:The huge suspension bridge can be seen from the high ground within the park and from the seaside, making it a particularly beautiful spot for evening and night views.
  • Seasonal flower beds and rose garden:The flower seasons, with tulips in spring, roses in early summer, and cosmos in autumn, are vibrant and photogenic.
  • Vast lawn area:It's perfect for picnics, ball games, or just relaxing. There's plenty of space for the whole family to spend the day.
  • Walking trails and observation decks:There is a promenade where you can walk while feeling the sea breeze, making it a popular spot for walking and jogging.
  • Children's play equipment and water play areas:Depending on the season, a water play area is open and is popular with children (please check opening times).
  • Events and Seasonal Festivals:Flower fairs, workshops, and seasonal events are often held here, so there is something different to enjoy depending on when you visit.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • car:Take the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway (via the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge from the Kobe direction) to Awaji Island. There is a parking lot at the park, so it is convenient to access by car. Follow the navigation system or signs to "Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park."
  • Bus (public transportation):The most common route is to take an express bus or local bus bound for Awajishima from the JR or Sanyo Electric Railway "Maiko" direction, get off at the bus stop on the Awajishima side (near Iwaya or Awaji Yumebutai), and then walk or take a taxi to the park. Buses also operate from the Sannomiya and Akashi areas. Please check the route and timetable in advance.
  • By bicycle or on foot:If the weather is good, we recommend cycling along with sightseeing in the surrounding area (there are restrictions on bicycles on the bridge).
  • remarks:The nearest bus stop and times for public transportation, parking fees and number of spaces, and opening and closing times for the park may change, so please check the official website for the latest information before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour (1-1.5 hours): View of the bridge and sea from the observation point, photography only.
  • Standard (2-3 hours): Stroll through the main flower beds and lawns, enjoy breaks and snacks.
  • Plenty (half a day to a full day): A plan to take your time touring the park and also visit the nearby Awaji Yumebutai and Botanical Gardens.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion:The number of visitors increases during Golden Week, summer vacation, when roses and cosmos are in full bloom, and on weekends. Please be aware of crowded parking lots and the park.
  • Weather and season:There are days when the wind is strong or the sun is strong along the coast. Please prepare warm clothes, a hat, sunscreen, and keep hydrated. Be careful of the heat in summer and the cold wind in winter.
  • Pets:Generally, there are areas where pets are allowed and areas where they are not. Please observe proper etiquette, such as keeping pets on a leash and taking their waste home with you.
  • Fires and barbecues:The use of fires and barbecues outside of designated areas is often prohibited, so please follow the park rules.
  • Garbage Manners:Please be sure to take your trash with you or dispose of it in designated areas, and be considerate of other visitors and the natural environment.
