Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kaho Theater is a historic theater in Iizuka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and a valuable cultural facility that preserves its wooden theater architecture from the Taisho period. Its exterior and interior blend Japanese and Western design, as well as its stage set structure and seating arrangement, are distinctive features that convey modern Japanese theater culture to the present day. In addition to hosting local vaudeville, kabuki, theater, and performances, the theater also serves as a hub for promoting local culture through theater tours and preservation and restoration activities, making it popular with tourists interested in architecture and stage design.

Highlights

  • Traditional Stage Structure: Classic theatrical devices such as the pit and the runway remain, allowing you to get a close look at the backstage mechanisms.
  • Wooden seating and decoration: The interior, which retains its original design with coffered ceilings, balconies, transoms, and lighting, is perfect for photos.
  • Performance viewing: A variety of events are held here, including kabuki, rakugo, theater, and music performances. You can experience the acoustics and realism of the theater at an actual performance.
  • Tours and commentaries: You may be able to tour the facility while hearing about the theater's history, architecture, and restoration (please check and make a reservation).
  • Seasonal and special performances: Local festivals and special events feature unusual performances and events, allowing you to experience the local atmosphere.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Nearest station: Iizuka Station (JR Chikuho Main Line) is within walking distance. It is about a 10-20 minute walk from the station (depending on the walking route and walking speed).

Public transportation: JR is the most convenient way to get there. It takes about an hour by train from Fukuoka (Hakata). It is also convenient to use local buses and taxis from the station.

By car: From central Fukuoka City, it takes about 40 minutes to an hour on the expressway or regular roads. Parking is often limited to public or municipal parking lots around the theater, so please check the parking location in advance.

*The above is a guideline. When attending a performance or viewing, please check the official website or tourist information for the latest access information (nearest bus stop, shuttle, and availability of parking).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Theater tour only: 30 minutes to 1 hour (depending on whether a guide is available and the quality of the exhibits)
  • Performance viewing time: Approximately 2 hours (based on the performance time. Depending on the program, there may be a daytime/nighttime change or the performance time may be longer)
  • If you combine your visit with a stroll around the area: 1.5 to 3 hours (including visiting cafes and sightseeing in the area)

Nearby spots

  • Stroll through the shopping streets and historical townscape of Iizuka City (the area around the theater is an area where old townscapes and shopping streets remain)
  • Facilities related to the Chikuho region's coal mining heritage and industrial history (There are many spots where you can learn about the history of the region)
  • Local restaurants and cafes: We recommend relaxing at a local restaurant or cafe before or after your visit to the theater.
  • Depending on the season, city events and festivals are also held (check them out too)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Opening/Performance Hours and Closures: Tours and performances are often held on limited days, so please check the schedule on the official website or by phone in advance.
  • Tickets and Reservations: Due to limited seating, advance reservations are required for popular performances. Reservations may also be required for viewings.
  • Manners inside the building: As this is a historical building, there may be rules such as no shoes allowed inside, restrictions on photography, and no flash photography. Please follow the instructions of the staff.
  • Barrier-free access: As this is an old building, there are many steps and stairs, and some areas may be difficult to navigate with wheelchairs or strollers. If you inquire in advance, you may be able to find alternative accommodations.
  • During busy times: Surrounding roads and parking lots will be congested on performance days, weekends, and during peak tourist seasons. Please allow yourself plenty of time to get around.
  • Seasonal precautions: Take precautions against the heat in summer and the cold in winter. Indoor performances are fine, but be careful about what you wear when moving around outdoors and waiting in line.

Before visiting, be sure to check the official information (the theater's official website or Iizuka City tourist information) for the latest opening hours, performance schedule, viewing methods, and access information. Kaho Theater is a facility of great historical value, so please observe proper etiquette and enjoy your time watching and touring the theater.
