Wakayama Castle (Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture) — Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)

Wakayama Castle is a castle towering over the center of Wakayama City. It was developed from the Sengoku period through to the early modern period, and flourished as the residence of the Kishu (Kii) Tokugawa clan during the Edo period. The castle remains, with high stone walls, turrets, and gates at its center, centered around the main enclosure built on top of a mountain. From the castle tower, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city, the Kii Channel, and the surrounding mountains. The castle ruins have been developed as Shiroyama Park, and are a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, as well as for historical walks and photography. In recent years, restoration, preservation, and maintenance have been progressing, and a facility for exhibiting materials has also been established.
