Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Wakayama Marina City is a resort complex built on an artificial island in Wakayama City. Taking advantage of its location facing the harbor, it is home to a European-style theme park called Porto Europa, a seafood market called Kuroshio Market, hotels, a marina, shopping and dining facilities, and seasonal events. Developed with the aim of attracting tourists and revitalizing the local area, it is popular with a wide range of people, including families, couples, and gourmet travelers. Its major attractions are the open atmosphere close to the sea, tuna cutting shows held right in front of you, and meals made with local seafood.

Highlights

  • Porto Europe: An area lined with buildings and attractions modeled after European cityscapes. You can enjoy photogenic scenery and seasonal events (such as illuminations).
  • Kuroshio Market: A market and dining space selling fresh seafood. Popular attractions include a tuna cutting show and a charcoal grill corner where purchased seafood is cooked on the spot.
  • Marina & Seaside Promenade: A marina lined with yachts and cruisers, and a promenade overlooking the sea. The sunset and night views are beautiful, making it perfect for taking photos or strolling.
  • Hotels and hot spring facilitiesThere are accommodation facilities adjacent to the marina where you can stay the night and enjoy the illuminated scenery at night and a leisurely stroll around the market the next day. Some marinas also have hot spring facilities for day use (please check as opening hours may change).
  • Seasonal Events: Seasonal events are held, such as fireworks in spring and summer, illuminations in winter, and weekend events.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus/Taxi: The nearest major station is JR Wakayama Station (or other major stations within Wakayama City, such as Nankai Wakayamashi Station). From JR Wakayama Station, you can also take a bus or taxi. Routes and travel times vary depending on the time of day and the train schedule, so please check the latest timetables and operation information in advance.
  • car: Accessible from the Hanwa Expressway (via the Kinki Expressway and Hanwa Expressway). Paid parking is available on site. It gets crowded on weekends and during peak seasons, so we recommend leaving early.
  • From the airport: Accessible by train, bus, or car from Kansai International Airport. There are direct buses, or the most common route is to take a train to Wakayama Station and then take a bus or taxi from there.
  • *Specific transfer information and travel times vary depending on your departure point, so please check public transportation schedules and road information before setting off.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: The area is especially crowded on weekends, public holidays, the summer beach season, the New Year's holiday, and Golden Week. Please allow yourself plenty of time as you may have to wait at restaurants and for parking.
  • Manners: Please observe basic etiquette, such as lining up at markets and restaurants and disposing of trash in designated areas. When taking photos, please be considerate of others and follow the instructions of staff, especially at events such as tuna cutting shows.
  • Weather and Seasonal Caution: As this is a seaside resort, there are days when the wind and sunlight are strong. Please take precautions against heatstroke in the summer, and be aware that the sea breeze can make the temperature feel lower in the winter. Some attractions and outdoor facilities may be closed on rainy days.
  • Check business information: Opening hours, closing days, and event schedules may vary depending on the facility. Please check the official website or contact information for the latest information before visiting.
  • Pet and wheelchair accessibility: Pet-friendly and barrier-free accessibility vary by facility. We recommend checking in advance whether pet-friendly areas and wheelchair accessibility are available.

(Note) The detailed opening days, opening hours, access timetables, and event information for each facility may change. Please check the Wakayama Marina City official website or facility counter for the latest information.
