Azuma Kofuji (Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Azuma Kofuji is a representative crater cone of the Azuma Mountain Range (Azuma Volcanic Group), a group of stratovolcanoes located in Fukushima City, and as its name suggests, is characterized by its beautiful conical shape resembling Mount Fuji. The mountain's body is made of scoria (volcanic gravel) and has a crater (opening) in the middle. The changing scenery throughout the seasons is fascinating, and the greenery of summer, the autumn foliage, and the snowy scenery of winter are all particularly worth seeing. The mountain can be viewed up close and circled from the Jododaira area, making it popular as a relatively accessible mountain even for beginners.
Highlights
- Trail that circles the crater rim (outer rim): This approximately 1km circular course around the crater rim, which resembles an upside-down bowl, offers a dynamic experience of seeing the crater up close. The course takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Volcanic activity and gases: The Azuma Volcano Group may be affected by volcanic activity. Sulfur smells and fumes may be present, so please follow any restrictions or warnings that are issued. Harmful gases may reach the area depending on the wind direction, so if you feel something is wrong, do not force yourself.
- Weather changes: Because of the high altitude, the weather can change suddenly, and you may experience strong winds or sudden cold weather. Please prepare warm clothing, rain gear, sunscreen, and drinks.
- Climbing equipment: There are some slippery areas on the volcanic gravel (scoria). We recommend wearing non-slip footwear such as trekking shoes.
- Road and traffic restrictions: The Bandai-Azuma Skyline and roads around Jododaira are closed during the winter, and may be closed due to snow accumulation or inspections. Please check road information in advance.
- Crowds: Parking lots and trails tend to be crowded during the autumn foliage season, holidays, and weekends. If you go early in the morning or on a weekday, you can enjoy a more leisurely tour.
- Manners: Please observe basic manners such as staying in restricted areas, taking your trash with you, staying on the hiking trails, and not picking plants or animals.
- Mobile phones and communications: There are areas in the mountains where mobile phone reception is unstable. It is a good idea to confirm emergency contact methods and ways to contact your companions.
