Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Yoshimi Hyakketsu is a group tomb of horizontal stone chambers in Yoshimi Town, Hiki District, Saitama Prefecture, believed to have been built around the Kofun period, Asuka, and Nara periods. It was given this name because the numerous horizontal caves (cave storehouses) dug into the cliff face, lined up together, resemble "a hundred holes" (many holes). Carved into soft tuff (tuffaceous sandstone and tuff layers), it is well preserved, and a major feature is that you can observe the internal structure, remains of the stone coffins, and construction techniques up close.
It has been designated a national historic site due to its high historical value, and the landscape created by the terrain and ruins changes with the seasons, making it a popular place for strolls and photography. Its charm lies in the fact that it gives a sense of the ancient burial system and local life, and in the tranquil atmosphere where nature and historical sites are united.
