Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Chirihama Nagisa Driveway (Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture) is one of the few sandy beaches in Japan where you can drive on. The coastline stretches for several kilometers, and the sand is very compact, making it possible for regular cars and buses to drive on it. The open feeling of the sea and sky, the extraordinary experience of driving along the water's edge, and the beautiful sunsets are all major tourist attractions, making it a popular spot for driving, strolling, and photography.
Highlights
- Driving along the beach: The experience of driving along the sandy beach itself is the highlight. You can feel the ocean and horizon up close from the car window.
- Sunset and sunrise scenery: On clear days, the bright red sun sinking into the sea is a beautiful sight, making it a popular photo spot.
- Beach walks and seashell hunting: Park your car and walk along the sand to observe seashells and sea creatures.
- Seasonal scenery: The sea is calm from spring to autumn, but the Sea of Japan is rough in winter, and the dynamic scenery during stormy weather is also worth seeing.
- Photo spot: Suitable for taking photos of cars with the horizon in the background or for panoramic shots.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Obey driving rules and signs: When driving, obey local speed limits and signs, and be considerate of pedestrians and cyclists.
- Tidal influence: The width of the road changes with the tides. There are sections where you cannot drive during high tide, so we recommend checking the tide information.
- Busy times: Golden Week, summer vacation, consecutive holidays, and sunset time in the evenings tend to be busy. If you want to avoid the crowds, it's best to visit on a weekday or early in the morning.
- Vehicle trouble prevention: It is possible to drive on the beach in a regular passenger car, but if you are unsure, have your car serviced beforehand and carry a cell phone and first aid kit just in case.
- Conservation of the natural environment and etiquette: Always take your trash with you, no open flames, and be considerate of the plants and creatures on the beach.
- Weather and Seasonal Information: In winter, strong winds and cold waves can cause severe weather, and in summer, protection from UV rays is required. Please check the local weather information before heading out.
Before you visit, be sure to check the latest traffic, tide and weather information, as well as official local tourist information. Enjoy a wonderful drive along the coast.
