Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (commonly known as the Red Brick Office) is a representative historical building in Sapporo that was built during the Meiji period. It is characterized by its red brick construction and central dome-style tower, and conveys the Western architectural style of the time to the present day. Formerly used as the administrative center of Hokkaido, the interior is now open to the public as an exhibition room and a free tourist information space. The contrast between the bricks and the scenery that changes with the seasons is beautiful, making it a popular photo spot.
Highlights
- Exterior: The red brick facade and central tower create a beautiful contrast on sunny days, in snowy scenery, and with the yellow leaves of autumn.
- Internal exhibits: Materials, old photographs, and historical documents introducing the history of Hokkaido's development and administration. Most exhibits are free to view (there may be a fee for special exhibitions).
- Hall of the old main building: The spacious entrance hall, decorations around the staircase, and architectural design retain the atmosphere of the time.
- Surrounding green space: The lawn and tree-lined streets in front of the building are perfect for strolling, and you can enjoy the changing seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, yellow leaves in autumn, and snowy scenery in winter.
