Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The ginkgo tree-lined street on the campus of Hokkaido University (Hokkaido University) is one of the most representative autumn sights in Sapporo. The tree-lined street has been loved by students and local residents for many years, and its yellow appearance has made it a popular spot for photography and strolling. The tree-lined street blends in with the green spaces on campus, creating a calm atmosphere that is characteristic of Hokkaido University. By strolling along the campus corridors and surrounding buildings, you can enjoy the beauty of both historical architecture and nature at the same time.

Highlights

  • A golden tunnel-like tree-lined path: At its peak, the walkway is covered in yellow leaves, creating a landscape that seems like another world.
  • Photo spot: Compositions looking up from under the trees and taking advantage of the depth of the tree-lined street are popular. Photos look beautiful when taken in the soft light of morning or dusk.
  • Combine it with a stroll around the campus: It's well worth visiting along with Hokkaido University's old brick buildings, poplar trees, and university museum.
  • Seasonal Appearances: The yellow leaves of autumn are famous, but you can also enjoy the scenery of each season, such as the fresh greenery of spring, the deep greenery of summer, and the snowy scenery of winter.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: About 5-10 minutes on foot from JR Sapporo Station or Sapporo Station on the Municipal Subway Namboku Line (travel time varies depending on the entrance).
  • Other stations: It is also within walking distance of Kita-Junijo Station on the Namboku Subway Line.
  • Bus: Take the Sapporo Municipal Bus or a local bus and get off near the Hokkaido University Main Gate or Sapporo Station stop.
  • By car: There are paid parking lots in the area, but the number of spaces is limited, so we recommend using public transportation. Parking on campus is often limited.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 20-30 minutes (just looking at the ginkgo trees)
  • Leisurely stroll and photography: 1-2 hours (taking photos and touring the university museum and surrounding area)
  • Combine with sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (when combining with Hokkaido University facilities and tourist spots in central Sapporo)

Nearby spots

  • Hokkaido University (on campus): Poplar trees, Hokkaido University Botanical Garden (check opening times depending on the season), Hokkaido University Museum, etc.
  • Around Sapporo Station: Shopping facilities and gourmet spots.
  • Former Hokkaido Government Office (Red Brick Building): A historic building in Sapporo, within walking distance.
  • Odori Park, Sapporo TV Tower, and Clock Tower: Major tourist attractions in Sapporo, just a few stops away by public transport.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area is extremely crowded on weekends and public holidays during peak season. Please be considerate to others taking photos and not obstructing pedestrians. We recommend visiting early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Manners: The university campus is a place for learning. Please refrain from making noise, leaving litter, or taking leaves or branches. Pets must be kept on a leash, and please be considerate of other users.
  • Safety and Facilities: The ground may get wet and slippery. Please wear comfortable shoes. It is a good idea to check in advance whether toilets are available on campus.
  • Illumination: There are some years when the temple is lit up, but this is not guaranteed to be the case every year. It is recommended to bring a flashlight or the light on your smartphone when visiting at night, as some areas are dark.
  • Climate: Sapporo can get cold quickly, even in autumn. Be sure to take precautions against the cold and prepare for sudden weather changes. In years when the first snowfall occurs early, you can see a beautiful contrast between the fallen leaves and snow.
  • Photography equipment: When it is crowded, the use of tripods may be a nuisance to others. Please be considerate of the situation when using them.

The Ginkgo Avenue at Hokkaido University is easily accessible and well worth a visit, even if you only spend a short time there. If you are planning on visiting in the fall, choose an early time or a weekday, and be considerate of the other visitors and facilities around you as you stroll around.
