Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Katsuura Underwater Park is an ocean observation facility located in Katsuura City, Chiba Prefecture. It features an underwater observation tower, promenade, and trial diving and snorkeling, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with marine life and the underwater scenery, making it popular with families and tourists looking to observe nature. From the underwater observation tower, visitors can view the underwater scenery through glass, which changes with the tides and seasons, and the park also offers exhibits and commentary in collaboration with local fishing and marine environment conservation efforts.

Highlights

  • Underwater observation tower (underwater observation window): You can leisurely observe the fish, seaweed, and reefs below the surface of the ocean. The advantage is that you can enjoy it without getting wet because it is through glass, and it is not easily affected by the weather.
  • Underwater walkway and pier: You can enjoy the sea breeze and ocean views while walking on the sea or along the beach. We also recommend the calm sea in the evening or morning.
  • Experience Programs: Snorkeling, trial diving, guided underwater observation tours, etc. (May vary depending on the season and reservations required). There are often programs for beginners as well.
  • Seasonal wildlife observationYou can enjoy the seasonal changes, such as tropical fish and colorful creatures in spring and summer, and on days in winter when the water is so clear you can see far into the distance.
  • Surrounding coastal scenery: The coastline, with its rocky areas, coves, and fishing village atmosphere, is also an attractive photo spot.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: The nearest major station is Katsuura Station on the JR Sotobo Line. You can get to the facility from the station by public transportation, taxi, or car.
  • public transportation: Local buses and regional buses may depart from the station, but they are often infrequent, so please check the timetable in advance. It is best to refer to official information regarding routes and seasonal availability.
  • taxi: It is convenient to take a taxi from Katsuura Station (travel time may vary depending on road conditions).
  • car: Accessible via the Tateyama Expressway and national highways. Parking is often available near the facility, but due to limited space, we recommend arriving early during peak seasons.
  • NoteBus schedules, parking information, and access times may vary depending on the season and road conditions. Please check the facility's official website or Katsuura City's tourist information for the latest information.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Underwater Observatory only: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • View + stroll around the area: 1-2 hours
  • If you include an experience program (snorkeling, introductory diving, etc.): 2-4 hours (varies depending on the program content)
  • If you plan to take your time taking photos and sightseeing in the surrounding area, you should allow yourself half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Katsuura Morning Market: A famous morning market where local fresh fish and seafood are lined up. Many tourists visit this market along with the underwater park.
  • Kamogawa Sea World: A large aquarium accessible by car, perfect for families.
  • Surrounding coasts (walking paths and rocky areas): Nearby there is a scenic coastline, a small fishing port, and scenic lookout points.
  • Yoro Valley (accessible by car): This is a spot where you can enjoy nature walks and the beauty of the valley, and is recommended for those who want to enjoy both the sea and the mountains.
  • These spots vary in distance and transportation options, so please combine them according to your schedule.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: Golden Week, summer vacation, and weekends tend to be busy, and parking lots and experience programs tend to fill up. We recommend making reservations in advance and arriving early.
  • Weather and sea conditions: The visibility and safety of the ocean are affected by weather, tides, and waves. Underwater observation and experiences may be canceled during stormy weather or on days with high waves. Please check the operating status of the facility before departing.
  • Safety measures: When snorkeling or diving, follow the instructions of lifeguards or instructors and always wear appropriate equipment. If you are not confident in your swimming ability, do not try.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners:Please protect the marine environment by not touching or feeding marine life, and taking any trash home with you. Please also be careful when using flash photography and bringing in objects.
  • What to wear and what to bring: It is convenient to bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen), shoes that can get wet, a change of clothes, beach sandals, and a towel. For the experience, it is more comfortable to wear a rash guard over your swimsuit.
  • Check business information: Opening hours, closing days, availability of experience programs, and fees may change depending on the season and maintenance. Please check the facility's official website or call the facility for the latest information before visiting.

(Additional Information) For the latest information on specific access timetables, experience menus, admission fees, etc., please check the official website of Katsuura Undersea Park or Katsuura City Tourist Information.
