Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Engetsuto is a small sea island off the coast of Shirahama Town, Nishimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture. A round hole has been created in the center of the island due to marine erosion, and the island was named after the shape it resembles a full moon (engetsu). The spectacle of the sun setting through this tall, gaping hole in the sea is particularly famous, making it a popular scenic spot for photography enthusiasts and tourists.

The island is known for its beautiful natural formations and coastline scenery, and is a popular spot to visit in combination with Shirahama Onsen and Shirarahama Beach. You cannot land on the island itself, but the main attractions are the view from the shore and the silhouette in the evening.

Highlights

  • Sunset seen through the circular hole: When the setting sun overlaps with the hole at sunset, you can see a fantastical scene that looks like a circular halo floating in the sky. The best time to take photos is during the golden hour in the evening.
  • Contrast of the sea and rocks: The contrast between the blue sea, white waves, and dark rock surface is beautiful, and its appearance changes depending on the season and weather.
  • Coastal walks: Walking along the coastline allows you to see the island from a different angle. The atmosphere is particularly pleasant in the quieter hours of the morning and evening.
  • Photography Tip: You can enjoy a variety of compositions, such as using a telephoto lens to capture the sun setting into the hole, or using a wide-angle lens to include the foreground and create a more majestic image.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Shirahama Station on the JR Kisei Main Line. From the station, you can access the resort by taxi or bus.
  • Bus/Taxi: It's about a 10-minute taxi ride from Shirahama Station. If you're using a local bus (Shirahama Town Line or tourist route), get off at Engetsuto or the surrounding bus stop. The number of buses varies depending on the season and day of the week, so it's recommended to check in advance.
  • By car: Approximately 15-20 minutes (depending on traffic conditions) via the national highway from Nanki Shirahama IC on the Hanwa Expressway. There are parking spaces nearby (both paid and free), but they can fill up during the tourist season, so it's best to arrive early.
  • Walking and Bicycles: It is within walking distance from Shirarahama Beach and Shirahama Onsen area, or by renting a bicycle. It is also recommended to combine a visit with a stroll.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term viewing: 15-30 minutes (photography and scenery only)
  • A leisurely stroll and photography: 30 minutes to 1 hour (if walking around the surrounding coastline and taking photos from multiple angles)
  • If you are aiming for the sunset: We recommend arriving 30 minutes before sunset to decide on the composition.

Nearby spots

  • Shirarahama: A famous beach with a long stretch of white sand. It is crowded with swimmers in the summer.
  • Shirahama Onsen: A long-established hot spring resort with many day-trip bathing facilities and inns.
  • Adventure World: A popular spot with panda exhibits and other animal exhibits, as well as amusement facilities (recommended for families).
  • Sandanbeki: A scenic spot where you can enjoy viewing the cliffs and caves. There are also boat tours to observe the underwater world.
  • Senjojiki: A spectacular view of the vast reef
  • Toretore Market: A market where you can buy local seafood and souvenirs. There are also plenty of restaurants.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The surrounding roads and parking lots are congested during the summer beach season, Golden Week, the Obon holiday period, and weekends. Even if you're aiming to see the sunset, arrive early as there will be a large number of tourists.
  • Safety: The rocks on the coast are slippery, and on days with high waves there is a risk of falling or being caught in the water. Do not enter areas with fences or restricted access.
  • Landing is not permitted: Landing on Engetsuto itself is not permitted. Please limit yourself to viewing and photographing from the shore.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Always take your trash with you, avoid damaging plants and rocks, and be considerate of local residents and other tourists.
  • Drone use: Be aware of regulations and etiquette when using drones. Flying drones is often restricted in tourist areas and on coastal areas, so be sure to check in advance.
  • Weather and sea conditions: The scenery may be dangerous during rough weather or high waves. In particular, do not approach the area if a typhoon is approaching.
  • Parking/Stopping on the street: Stopping on the street or illegally parking for photography in scenic spots can be a nuisance. Please use designated parking lots.

Engetsu Island is a spot that can be seen in a short amount of time, so it is efficient to combine your visit with other tourist spots in Shirahama. The view at dusk is particularly impressive, so it is a good idea to check the weather forecast and sunset times before heading out.
