Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Maruyama Park is a beloved urban park in Sapporo's Chuo Ward. Established alongside Sapporo's urban development from the Meiji period onward, it boasts a rich natural landscape centered around the neighboring Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama (a small mountain). Enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy winter scenery, and is known as a popular walking spot, picnic spot, and cherry blossom viewing spot for locals. The park is also home to facilities such as the Maruyama Zoo and a baseball field, making it a popular spot for families.

Highlights

  • Cherry Blossom Avenue: A famous cherry blossom viewing spot that is usually at its best from late April to early May. It is often crowded with people as a cherry blossom viewing spot.
  • Hokkaido Shrine: A shrine adjacent to the park. It is bustling with people visiting for the New Year and holding seasonal festivals (Sapporo Festival in June).
  • Maruyama (Walking Trail): A low-altitude rural mountain where you can enjoy a casual hike. From the summit you can see the view of Sapporo city.
