Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yagiyama Zoo (Taihaku Ward, Sendai City) is a municipal zoo that displays a wide variety of animals on a large site that makes use of the natural terrain. It was developed as a place of relaxation for the local residents, and is characterized by its exhibits that emphasize a balance between conservation, education, and exhibitions. It has a large playground that recreates a natural environment, an exhibition room that makes it easy to observe, and a facility for children to interact with animals, making it a popular destination for families and school field trips. One of its attractions is being able to observe the lives of animals while enjoying the scenery that changes with the seasons.

Highlights

  • Large animal and herbivore exhibition area: You can see them living freely in a space close to nature up close.
  • Petting plaza/small animal corner: A space where you can interact with guinea pigs and small animals (please check the hours and dates).
  • Bird and raptor exhibit: Learn about their flight and feeding habits from explanatory panels.
  • Observation Spots and Observation Decks: There are points where you can see Sendai city from a great vantage point that takes advantage of the differences in elevation within the park.
  • Educational programs and explanations: You can learn more about the animals through explanations by zookeepers about their care and exhibits, as well as seasonal special exhibits.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Yagiyama Zoological Park Station on the Sendai City Subway Tozai Line. It is about a few minutes to 10 minutes on foot from the station (this varies depending on the entrance).
  • From Sendai Station: Direct subway on the Tozai Line (travel time varies depending on the line and transfers, but is approximately 20-30 minutes).
  • Bus/Car: Access is also possible via Sendai City buses. While there may be paid parking at the park, the number of spaces is limited, so we recommend using public transportation when it is crowded.
  • Bicycles and walking: The surrounding area is a residential area and parkland, making it easy to get to the park by bicycle.

*Please check the official website or Sendai City guide in advance for the latest access and parking information.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Typical visit: 2-3 hours. This is the estimated time to see all the main exhibits.
  • If a leisurely observation, interaction and explanation program is included: Approximately half a day (3-5 hours).
  • Traveling with small children: Plan your schedule with plenty of time as trips and breaks will likely be extended.

Nearby spots

  • Yagiyama Bennyland (Amusement Park): A leisure facility that is easy to visit together with the zoo.
  • Nearby parks and walking trails: There are many spots where you can take a walk outside the park and enjoy nature.
  • It also has good access to the center of Sendai, making it convenient to combine your stay with other tourist spots in Sendai, such as Jozenji Street and the Aoba Castle ruins.

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park tends to be crowded on weekends, national holidays, long school holidays, Golden Week, summer vacation, and consecutive holidays. Visiting early in the morning or on a weekday will allow for a more relaxed experience.
  • Terrain within the park: As the park is located in hilly terrain, there are many slopes and stairs in some areas. It may be difficult to move around in some areas with a stroller or wheelchair, so please check the route in advance.
  • Weather: As many of the exhibits are outdoors, on rainy or extremely hot days the animal exhibits may be subject to change or observations may be indoors. Please be sure to prepare appropriate clothing and hydrate yourself.
  • Manners: Feeding the animals is generally prohibited (except for special experience programs). Please observe basic manners such as not shouting, not touching fences or glass, and following instructions.
  • Photography: General photography is permitted, but please refrain from using flash or any actions that may interfere with the exhibits. Prior permission is required for special photography (for commercial use, etc.).
  • Check the latest information: Opening hours, closing days, and the status of events and interactive programs may change depending on the season or circumstances. Please check the official website or facility guide in advance.

Have a nice trip. For detailed information on opening hours, fees, events, etc., please check the official website of Yagiyama Zoo or the information page of Sendai City.
