Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Lake Saroma (Saroma Town) is a brackish water lagoon facing the Sea of Okhotsk in northeastern Hokkaido, and is the largest lake in Hokkaido and one of the largest in Japan. Once a brackish water area formed by a sandbar separating it from the sea, the mixture of freshwater and seawater has made it a rich fishing ground, and scallop and oyster farming is thriving here.

Historically, it has been deeply connected to the local fishing industry and the lives of coastal communities, and is attractive for its abundant nature, including seasonal migratory birds. It is also popular for its sunrises and sunsets reflected on the wide lake surface and for enjoying quiet strolls along the lakeside.

Highlights

  • Lakeside observation point: The view of the lake from the open field of view changes with the light in the morning and evening, making it a great place for photography.
  • Bird watching: Many migratory birds gather in the unique ecosystem of this brackish water area, and it is possible to observe shorebirds such as snipes and plovers (species change depending on the season).
  • Fishing and marine products: The scenery of scallop farming rafts and the fishing port gives a sense of life in this region. You can tour the area and taste local seafood at the direct sales store (availability of facilities varies depending on the season).
  • Cycling and Walking: There are sections of the roads around the lake with little traffic, so you can enjoy nature by leisurely cycling or walking.
  • Scenery of the nearby Okhotsk Sea: If conditions are right, you can combine this with sightseeing of the drift ice that can be seen along the Okhotsk coast in winter (viewing it from land and visiting the surrounding exhibition facilities).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Public Transportation: Saroma Town is located in a rural coastal area, so public transportation is less frequent. The nearest major train stations are JR Abashiri and Kitami, and you may need to take a local bus or taxi from there. Schedules and service may change depending on the season and day of the week, so we recommend checking in advance.
  • Air: Memanbetsu Airport (Memanbetsu), the gateway to eastern Hokkaido, is relatively close, and it is convenient to travel from there by rental car or express bus. Renting a car allows you to freely explore the surrounding area.
  • Car: Access is primarily via national and prefectural roads. Renting a car or your own car is the easiest way to get around, and a car is convenient if you plan to combine it with sightseeing in the surrounding area. Parking spaces vary depending on the tourist base, so please check the signs and tourist information in town.
  • Note: Public transport is infrequent, so please check the return trip time and arrange a taxi in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: If you just want to enjoy the lakeside view, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Leisurely sightseeing: Half a day (2-4 hours) including strolling, photography, and a visit to a nearby farm shop.
  • If you include sightseeing in the surrounding area: A one-day trip to nearby tourist attractions and towns.

Nearby spots

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Transportation: Public transportation is infrequent, so please check the schedule and operating days in advance. Renting a car is the most convenient option.
  • Seasonal clothing and road conditions: Winter can be bitterly cold, with frozen and snowy roads, so winter tires and cold weather gear are essential. Even in spring, summer, and autumn, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings.
  • Respect for nature and ecosystems: Brackish lakes are habitats for migratory birds and fisheries. When observing birds, please maintain a distance and do not disturb their breeding or resting areas. Do not enter fishing facilities or aquaculture facilities without permission.
  • Garbage and Manners: To protect the natural environment, please be sure to take your trash with you and respect local rules.
  • Facility opening hours and periods: Many direct sales stores and tourist facilities are seasonal, and opening days and times may change. Please check official information or tourist guides before visiting.
  • Medical and communication environment: In mountainous areas or remote lakeside areas, mobile phone signals and access to medical facilities may be limited. When traveling long distances, be sure to pay attention to emergency contact methods and health management.

Finally, the area around Lake Saroma is a quiet place rich in nature. If you plan your visit well and are considerate of the local area, you will have a pleasant and enjoyable time.
