Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Izu Oshima (Oshima Town, Tokyo) is one of the most representative islands of the Izu Islands, located approximately 120km south of Tokyo. It is a volcanic island with the active volcano Mount Mihara at its center. There are records of eruptive activity since ancient times, and the island is characterized by its topography, black lava areas, desert-like landscapes, abundant seas, and warm climate. In early spring, camellias decorate the entire island, and the island is also known for camellia-themed festivals and local specialties (camellia oil and camellia products). Relatively easy access from the Tokyo metropolitan area makes it an attractive place to enjoy a variety of activities, including nature walks, mountain climbing, fishing, diving, and hot springs.
Highlights
- Mount Mihara (visiting the crater and strolling around the summit): You can see the large crater of the active volcano and its volcanic topography up close. The walking trail and observation deck at the summit offer excellent views of the entire island, Sagami Bay, and the Izu Islands. There are information boards about the volcano and viewpoints.
- Urasabaku (Back Desert): A desolate "desert" landscape created by lava and volcanic ash. Photography, sunset viewing, and 4WD tours are popular.
- Oshima Park and Camellia Garden: A garden and observation facility featuring a variety of camellia varieties. It is especially beautiful during camellia season, making it a great place for a stroll.
- Habu Port townscape: Enjoy the alleyways and cobblestone streets that retain the atmosphere of a historic port town, as well as scenery that has been featured in films and literature.
- Sea and marine activities: Diving, snorkeling, and rock fishing are popular in the crystal clear waters. There are also surf spots.
- hot spring: You can soothe your fatigue at hot spring facilities that originate from volcanic activity (most of the hot springs are attached to accommodation facilities).
- Camellia Festival and Local Cuisine:Camellia-related events from winter to spring, fresh seafood, dishes using camellia oil, etc.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Ship (ferry/high-speed boat)
- The route generally departs and arrives from Tokyo (Takeshiba Pier), and is operated by Tokai Kisen and others. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by high-speed boat (jet boat), and about 8 to 10 hours by overnight large passenger boat (ferry) (depending on the operating company and type of flight).
- There may also be flights departing from and arriving at Yokohama, Atami, etc. Please check in advance as routes and times may change depending on the season and weather.
- plane
- It takes about 20 to 30 minutes by regular flight (small propeller plane, etc.) from Haneda Airport. The number of flights varies depending on the season and bad weather.
- Traveling within the island
- There are local buses, rental cars, rental bicycles, and taxis available on the island. There are few buses between tourist spots, so if you want to travel to multiple spots efficiently, we recommend renting a car (or renting a motorbike). Rental cars are limited in number, so we recommend making a reservation in advance.
- The most common way to get to the Miharayama trailhead is by car and then follow the footpath to the summit.
- The nearest station on the mainland: If you are heading to Takeshiba Pier, you can access it on foot or by bus from JR Hamamatsucho Station. To get to Haneda Airport, you can take the train or monorail.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip: If you use a high-speed ferry or an early morning ferry, it is possible to visit Mt. Mihara, Oshima Park, and Habu Port in one day. However, there is little time for travel and departures, so it can be hectic.
- 2 days, 1 night: A standard plan that allows you to easily visit the main spots (Mt. Mihara, Ura Desert, Oshima Park, Habu Port, hot springs).
- Two nights or more: If you want to enjoy diving, fishing, leisurely sightseeing, or participating in seasonal events, we recommend a longer stay.
- Individual estimates: Approximately 1-2 hours to the summit of Mt. Mihara (round trip), around 1 hour to visit the Ura Desert, 1-2 hours to visit Oshima Park and Camellia Garden, 1-1.5 hours to explore Habu Port.
Nearby spots
- On the island: Oshima Park, Ura Desert, Habu Port, caving and beach activities, shopping streets and observation decks around each port, and hot spring facilities.
- Nearby Izu Islands: Niijima, Shikinejima, Toshima, Toshima, etc. (There are also ferries and high-speed boats that allow you to travel to other islands, so you can enjoy island hopping.)
- Mainland side: Departs and arrives in Tokyo (Takeshiba), so it's easy to plan a trip that combines with sightseeing in the city center.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Check volcano information: Because Mt. Mihara is an active volcano, access restrictions and evacuation orders may be issued in the event of an eruption alert, volcanic earthquakes, or the release of volcanic gas. Please check the Japan Meteorological Agency and local disaster prevention information before departing.
- Transport suspensions and delays: Sea and air travel is prone to cancellations and delays due to weather conditions (strong winds, high waves, poor visibility). Be especially careful during the winter to spring monsoon and typhoon seasons. Plan your trip with ample time to spare.
- Busy period: Accommodation and rental cars fill up quickly during the camellia viewing season (winter to spring), long weekends, and summer. Be sure to reserve accommodation, boats, and cars early.
- Environment and Manners: The natural environment on the island is precious. Please take your trash with you, avoid camping or bonfires outside of designated areas, and collecting trash on the coast or mountain trails may be prohibited.
- Equipment and health management: Mt. Mihara and the Ura Desert can be rough due to the sun, wind, and volcanic ash. When hiking, please prepare comfortable walking shoes, warm and windproof gear, water, and sunscreen. Please also bring cash as there are some areas where mobile phone reception and credit card use are limited.
- Vehicles and Roads:The island's roads have narrow sections and steep slopes, so be careful of tourist buses and oncoming vehicles. There are few rental cars, so if you are not confident in your driving, we recommend using the bus or taxi.
Izu Oshima is a fascinating island with dynamic volcanic scenery, warm nature, and plenty of marine activities. Be sure to check traffic and weather conditions in advance and follow the island's rules to enjoy the island safely.
