Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Iejima (Ie Village) is a small remote island located northwest of Okinawa's main island, off the coast of Nakijin and the Motobu Peninsula. The island is characterized by its symbolic conical mountain, Mt. Shiroyama (commonly known as Tacchu), and the entire island is surrounded by a laid-back rural landscape and beautiful sea. Historically, it was the site of a major battle during the Pacific War (the Battle of Okinawa), and has since recovered. The island's charm lies in the traditional culture and festivals of the local people, as well as agricultural products such as lilies. Popular tourist attractions include trekking, beaches, diving and snorkeling, island cycling, and the spring Lily Festival.

Highlights

  • Shiroyama (Tacchu)
A volcanic cone that symbolizes Iejima. Although it is a short climb, the summit offers a 360-degree panorama, and on clear days you can see all the way to the main island and the surrounding sea. This is a spot with beautiful morning and evening views (there are steep slopes and rocky areas, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended).
  • Beach/sea (snorkeling, diving)
The island is dotted with white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, perfect for observing coral and tropical fish. There are also introductory diving and snorkeling tours for beginners.
  • Lily fields and Iejima Lily Festival
Iejima is also known for its lily cultivation, and in spring the island is decorated with lilies. The annual Lily Festival is an event where you can enjoy flowers and local culture (the timing varies depending on the year).
  • War and historical sites
There are many historical sites and memorial sites scattered throughout the area that convey the scars of the Battle of Okinawa. If you are interested in history, we recommend taking a guided tour or learning about the background at a museum.
  • Cycling and island walks
It is a compact island with a circumference of about 20km. You can enjoy the rural scenery and village atmosphere by renting a bicycle or motorbike and exploring at your leisure.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

There are no full-scale railways on the main island of Okinawa, so the most common way to get to Ie Island is by land and ferry from Naha.

  • Starting point (air route): Naha Airport (Naha)
  • Port on the main islandFerries and high-speed boats operate from Motobu Port in Motobu Town to Ie Port on Ie Island.
  • Estimated travel timeThe ferry ride from Motobu Port to Ie Port takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the service. From Naha to Motobu, it takes approximately 1.5-2.5 hours by car or bus (depending on the route and transportation).
  • Transportation on the main islandRenting a car is convenient and offers a high degree of freedom. There are also bicycle and motorbike rental services around Motobu Port. While a car or motorbike is a convenient way to get around the island, you can also enjoy the villages and major tourist spots on foot.
  • remarksFerry times vary depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the operating company's timetable in advance. Ferries may be canceled in the event of bad weather (typhoons or fronts).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: Take a round trip boat from Motobu Port. The trip to the summit of Tacchu, plus a short stroll around the beach and village, takes about 6 to 8 hours. The time depends on the boat schedule.
  • 2 days and 1 night (recommended): Take your time to explore the island's main attractions, enjoy the sunset, the starry sky at night, and even play in the sea the next day. If you want to fully enjoy sightseeing, activities, and meals, it's a good idea to stay overnight.
  • 2 nights or more: Suitable for diving, multiple activities, festival attendance, and relaxing stays.

Nearby spots

  • Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (Motobu Town): Located near Motobu Port, it is famous for its large exhibits, including whale sharks. Many tourists visit it together with Iejima.
  • Kouri Island (Nakijin and Nago area): A small island with a stunning bridge and ocean view. It's easy to combine with other attractions as part of a driving course.
  • Nakijin Castle Ruins: The ruins of the Ryukyu Kingdom castle, registered as a World Heritage Site. Recommended as a historical walking spot.
  • Bise Fukugi Tree Line (Motobu Town): A walking path that resembles a green tunnel and is a popular photo spot.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Weather and flight informationFerries are canceled during typhoons and bad weather. Be sure to check the operation information before traveling. Be careful of summer squalls and strong winds.
  • Summer crowds and sunshine: July and August are the swimming season and the beach will be crowded. Don't forget to take precautions against sunburn (hat, sunscreen, and staying hydrated).
  • Maritime Safety:The sea can suddenly become deep in places due to currents and gaps in the coral reef. We recommend wearing a life jacket and being accompanied by a local guide. Please also be careful of jellyfish and other marine life.
  • Environmental protection and etiquette: Please respect the local nature and lifestyle by not taking any coral or shells, always taking your trash with you, and not entering private property or farmland without permission.
  • Feet and equipment: There are some rocky and slippery areas on Tacchu. Please wear sneakers or other comfortable shoes when hiking. For safety on the beach, wear water shoes.
  • Payment and transportation arrangements: Some shops and restaurants on the island only accept cash. It is safer to make reservations for rental cars and accommodation in advance.

Iejima is a small island packed with nature, culture, and history. You can get a feel for the island's atmosphere even in a short time, but you'll enjoy it more if you stay longer. Please be mindful of safety and good manners, and enjoy your time on the island at your own pace.
