Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hitoyoshi Onsen is a hot spring resort located in the center of Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and along the Kuma River. Retaining the atmosphere of a castle town, Hitoyoshi has long thrived as a hot springs town for travelers and for those seeking therapeutic baths, and even today it is dotted with numerous long-established inns, public baths, and footbaths. While the quality of the hot spring water varies from facility to facility, many inns offer water that is gentle on the skin and relaxing soaks directly from the source. The area's appeal lies in the fact that it can be enjoyed alongside the riverside scenery, castle ruins, and historical buildings. The area also boasts a wealth of tourist attractions, including Kuma River boat rides, the Hitoyoshi steam locomotive, local shochu (Kuma shochu), and local cuisine (horse sashimi, etc.), making it a popular destination for both hot spring and cultural experiences.

Highlights

  • Kuma River scenery: Enjoy strolling along the riverside and seasonal scenery (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, winter scenery).
  • Kuma River Cruise: A popular activity is a sightseeing boat ride down the river on a traditional boat. With a guide, you can enjoy the valley and surrounding nature.

  • Approximate travel time by train: From Kumamoto Station, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by express or local train (this may vary depending on the train type and timetable). From Hakata or Fukuoka, it usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours with transfers.
  • Approximate car time: Approximately 1-1.5 hours by car from Kumamoto city (varies depending on traffic conditions). Travel times vary from various parts of Kyushu, so we recommend checking your route before setting off.
  • From the airport: You can access the area from Kumamoto Airport by rental car, express bus, or limousine (travel time varies depending on the means of transportation).
  • Note: Tourist trains such as the SL Hitoyoshi often require advance reservations and seat reservations, and they can get crowded during peak seasons. Please check the official website in advance for information on routes, operation status, and timetables.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Bathing etiquette: Please observe standard Japanese hot spring etiquette, such as not wearing towels inside the bath or bringing towels into the bath. Photography is often prohibited inside the bath.
  • Tattoos: There are still many facilities that will refuse entry to bathers with tattoos. If you have a tattoo, please check with the facility in advance, or consider using a private bath or family bath.
  • Busy periods: Accommodations and sightseeing are expected to be crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and the New Year holidays. We recommend making reservations for accommodations and activities early.
  • Weather and seasonal precautions: During the rainy season and typhoons, the water level of the Kuma River rises, and river rafting and riverside walks may be restricted. Please be especially aware of landslides and flooding during heavy rain, and check local information.
  • Changes in access information: Steam locomotive and sightseeing boat operations may change or be suspended due to season or inspection. Please check the official website in advance for the latest timetable and operation information.
  • Clothing and belongings: Temperatures can vary greatly depending on the season. If you plan to relax at your accommodation, please bring a change of clothes and a yukata, as well as comfortable shoes for outdoor sightseeing.

(Additional Information) We recommend checking the latest facility operating hours and traffic conditions with the Hitoyoshi City Tourism Association or each facility's official website or by phone before visiting.
