Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kyoto Aquarium is an urban aquarium located within Umekoji Park in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, which opened in 2012. In addition to the marine life of coastal waters such as the Sea of Japan and the Seto Inland Sea, it also focuses on Japan's freshwater ecosystems, including Lake Biwa and the rivers surrounding Kyoto. Though it is a compact facility located in the heart of the city, it offers a variety of attractions, including dolphin performances, a large aquarium, an exhibit of rare giant salamanders, an exhibit of penguins and seals, and a touch pool, and also introduces local nature and environmental conservation efforts.
Highlights
- Dolphin show (performance): A show held in the indoor Aqua Show Stadium. Because it is indoors, it is less affected by the weather and you can see impressive jumps and training (the show has designated times and limited seating).
- Giant salamander exhibit: An exhibit where you can get up close and personal with giant salamanders, a large amphibian endemic to Japan. It also introduces conservation and breeding efforts.
- Kyoto Rivers and Freshwater Zone: Learn about the importance of Satogawa ecosystems and aquatic environments through the fish and aquatic life that live in Lake Biwa and the rivers around Kyoto.
- Large aquarium and marine life exhibit: The aquariums filled with migratory fish and colorful fish are worth seeing. The exhibits are compact in size but are designed to be easy to see.
- Penguin and Seal Corner: Watching the penguins swim and the adorable behavior of the seals is popular. There are also feeding times and explanations.
- Touch Pool and Experience Programs: There are sometimes experiences available where you can directly touch starfish, sea cucumbers, and other creatures, which are popular with families with children (programs are subject to date, time, and number of participants).
- Seasonal Events and Night Aquarium: There are special seasonal exhibitions and night-time events, so you can enjoy the light shows and the nocturnal behavior of the creatures.
