Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kuonji Temple, located in Minobu Town, Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture, is one of the head temples of the Nichiren sect. Its large temple grounds stretch from the middle to the summit of Mount Minobu. It began as a base for Nichiren (1222-1282) when he entered Mount Minobu at the end of the Kamakura period, and developed as a base for spreading his teachings. The temple grounds are lined with the Mieido Hall, main hall, mountain gate, cemetery, and numerous sub-temples (tatchu: branch temples), making it both a place of worship and a tourist destination with beautiful seasonal scenery.
