Ueno Zoo (Taito Ward, Tokyo)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Ueno Zoo, located within Ueno Park, is Japan's oldest zoo, having opened in 1882. Over its long history, it has exhibited many animals and engaged in conservation and educational activities, making it popular with locals and tourists alike. Divided into East and West Gardens, the two are connected by an in-park monorail and garden paths.
Its distinctive features include the exhibits of rare animals, creative breeding exhibits (renovated exhibit halls and educational exhibits), and a rich educational program including seasonal events and backstage tours. The giant pandas in particular have been a symbol of the zoo's long-standing popularity, attracting many visitors (please check official information as exhibit status may change).
