Manza Onsen (Tsumagoi Village, Gunma Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Manza Onsen is a hot spring resort located on the plateau of Tsumagoi Village, Gunma Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 1,800m, making it one of Japan's highest hot spring resorts. It has long been known as a therapeutic hot spring resort, and is surrounded by majestic mountain ranges such as Mount Asama, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons. The hot spring water is an acidic sulfur spring containing a high amount of sulfur, and is characterized by its cloudy white color and strong sulfurous smell. It is also popular as a "beauty bath" and "therapeutic bath" because it leaves a moist feeling on the skin. The clear air and snowy scenery unique to the high altitude, as well as the view from the open-air bath, are major attractions.
Highlights
- Milky white sulfur spring and steamy scenery: The steam rising from the bath, the smell of sulfur, and the highland scenery all come together to create a unique atmosphere.
- View from the open-air bath: On clear days, many open-air baths offer views of Mount Asama and the surrounding plateau, allowing you to enjoy the scenery while bathing.
- Enjoy the seasonal nature of this highland resort: in summer you can enjoy hiking and alpine plants, in autumn you can enjoy autumn leaves, and in winter you can enjoy skiing and snowy scenery.
- Manza Onsen Ski Resort: A large ski resort is nearby where you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding in the winter.
- Hot Spring Tour: There are several accommodation facilities and day-use bathing facilities in the hot spring town, so you can enjoy visiting different hot springs (check the bathing rules and times at each facility).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
The main ways to get there are by car and public transportation (train and bus).
- By car: It takes about 3 to 4 hours from Tokyo via the Kan'etsu Expressway and Joshin'etsu Expressway. In winter, there may be snow and ice, so chains or studless tires may be required.
- Train + Bus: The most common route is to take a local bus or the accommodation's shuttle bus from the nearest JR station. Routes and services vary depending on the season and day of the week, so be sure to check the timetable and accommodation's shuttle information in advance.
- Express buses and tours: Depending on the season, direct buses and tours may operate from Tokyo. Direct buses are especially convenient during the winter ski season.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip: Approximately 2-4 hours for a hot spring bath and a light stroll. It will be longer if travel time is included.
- One night stay: We recommend staying at least one night, as you can relax in the hot springs and enjoy meals at the inn, as well as the open-air baths in the early morning and evening.
- Two nights or more: If you plan to combine activities such as hiking, driving, and skiing in the area, two nights or more will give you more flexibility.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Accommodations and day-use baths are crowded during tourist seasons (autumn foliage, New Year's, winter ski season). Advance reservations are recommended, especially on weekends and long holidays.
- Bathing etiquette: Please observe general hot spring etiquette, such as pouring water over yourself and washing your body before bathing, not putting towels in the bath, and following the rules and regulations of the inn or facility. Rules regarding tattoos vary depending on the facility, so be sure to check in advance.
- Note about the spring quality: Sulfur springs can be highly acidic, which can irritate those with sensitive skin or wounds. Avoid long baths or drinking alcohol immediately after bathing, and consult a doctor if you have any concerns about your health.
- Highland climate: Due to the high altitude, mornings and evenings are often cold even in summer, and heavy snowfall and snow accumulation can lead to traffic restrictions in winter. Clothing, equipment, and winter gear for your car are essential.
- Environmental conservation: To protect the natural environment, please take care to take your trash home with you, check information on volcanic activity in the area, and check access restrictions.
- Transportation: Public transportation is limited, so it's a good idea to check timetables and shuttle services in advance.
Manza Onsen is a hot spring resort that combines the magnificent scenery of the plateau with unique sulfur springs. While it's easy to visit on a day trip, we especially recommend staying overnight and enjoying the hot springs in the morning and evening. It's a good idea to plan your visit in conjunction with the seasonal nature and nearby tourist attractions.
